Austal Celebrates Keel Laying for Cape
Demonstrating the rapid progress of the Cape Class Patrol Boat Program, Austal today hosted the keel-laying ceremony for the third vessel, Cape Nelson, one of eight 56-meter patrol boats that Austal is designing, building and supporting for the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service. Keel-laying traditionally marks the first significant milestone in a ship’s construction. Historically this was the “laying down” of the main timber making up the backbone of a vessel.
Final Aircraft Elevator Installed on U.S. Aircraft Carrier
Huntington Ingalls Industries announced today that its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division installed the third and final aircraft elevator on the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). The elevator, which is used to move aircraft from the hangar bay to the flight deck quickly and safely, is located on the starboard side of the ship. It measures 85 feet long and 52 feet wide and weighs 120 tons, akin to a steam locomotive.

Kongsberg Maritime Report Strong Growth in Q2 2013
Kongsberg is reporting operating revenues in the second quarter of 2013 of MNOK 4 097, up 4.2 per cent year-on-year. EBITDA came to MNOK 513 in Q2, compared with MNOK 525 in Q2 2012. At mid-year, operating revenues totalled MNOK 8 130, translating into growth of 4.7 per cent from mid-year 2012. The expansion in H1 has been driven by Kongsberg Maritime, which posted growth of 13.9 per cent compared with H1 2012, and is continuing to report a significant influx of new orders.
