Newport News, Hampton Convert Trash Into Steam Energy
Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is partnering with the City of Hampton to convert shipyard trash into steam power. As part of the new Single Stream Recycling Program, the shipyard's solid waste is incinerated at Hampton's award-winning steam plant facility and converted to steam through a process known as "waste-to-energy." The energy is then used to power NASA Langley Research Center (NASA LaRC) facilities.

Nordic Yards to Build Deckhouse for Russian Icebreaker
Nordic Yards has been awarded the tender for the construction of a deckhouse for a Russian icebreaker. A contract for the fabrication of a deckhouse as part of the superstructure for the icebreaker LK-25 was concluded between the St. Petersburg Baltic Shipyard, which is part of the Russian state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation OSK, and Germany's Nordic Yards. According to the terms of the contract, the deckhouse weighs 2,500 tonnes and is fully fitted out.
Great Lakes Coal Trade Up 7.3% in July
Shipments of coal on the Great Lakes totaled 2.9 million tons in July, an increase of 2.5% over June, and an increase of 7.3% compared to a year ago. This marks the second straight month trade rises.
Crowley to Expand Petroleum Fleet and Service Offerings
Crowley Maritime Corporation announced today that it will continue to grow its fleet of petroleum vessels and enhance service to customers by contracting with Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc. (APSI) to build up to eight product tankers for delivery between 2015 and the end of 2017.
