Pleasure Craft Aflame on St. Marys River
The Coast Guard rescued two people from a burning boat on the St. Marys River in the vicinity of Sugar Island, Mich., Thursday morning. At approximately 9:10 a.m., a communications watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., overheard a distress call via VHF-FM channel 16 reporting that a 17-foot pleasure craft was fully engulfed in flames near Sugar Island on the St. Marys River. The distress call was made by a good Samaritan in the area at the time of the fire.
Euronav: Extension of FSO Financing
Euronav announced that it has, jointly with Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc., signed a two-year extension of the tranche related to the FSO Africa (the Africa Tranche), part of the $500 million senior secured credit facility originally signed in October 2008. At the time of the extension, $ 45 million was outstanding in respect of the Africa Tranche. At its new maturity (now scheduled for August 2015), the Africa Tranche will be fully repaid.
MLC Demands Generate Rise in Defibrillator Orders
Martek Marine reported a significant increase in marine defibrillator sales in 2013, up 475% on 2012, with over four months of the year remaining. These sales include an order of more than 100 AEDs to Swire’s entire China Navigation fleet, as Swire beat the new Maritime Labour Convention’s (MLC) August deadline to have a marine defibrillator on every vessel, with crew trained in its use. First Multiagency Beach Rescue Exercise off South Padre Island
More than 50 people from three response agencies simulated a joint agency response to an incident involving 12 people off popular South Padre Island beaches, Texas, on Wednesday, August 28. The Coast Guard, City of South Padre Island Beach Rescue and Cameron County Beach Rescue joined together in the Beach Rescue Interagency Team Exercise, or BRITE, to evaluate communication and coordination between the agencies as they managed recovery, triage and transportation for all the victims at one time.
