Two New Ferries Named in Liverpool
Liverpool, U.K. city region based shipyard and engineering firm Cammell Laird has hosted a formal naming ceremony for the first complete ships constructed by the company in 20 years for Scottish ferry operator Western Ferries. Maersk Line Bucks Trend: Profitable Q2 2013
Maersk Line made a profit of USD 439m (USD 227m) and a ROIC of 8.5% (4.6%) as reported in the company's second quarter 2013 interim report. The significant improvement in the financial performance was achieved through lower costs. Volumes increased 2.1%, average freight rate decreased 13.1% and total cost per FFE decreased by 12.7%.The cost decrease was mainly driven by vessel network efficien- cies and lower bunker price. Maersk Line’s total fleet capacity decreased by 0.9%.

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) has delivered Los Angeles-class attack submarine 'USS Pittsburgh' (SSN 720) on-time and under budget after drydock overhaul. PNSY conducted the Pittsburgh pre-inactivation restricted availability (PIRA) off-yard at Sub Base New London in Groton, Conn. beginning Sept. 5, 2012. Teekay Self-Propelled DP System En Route to Las Palmas
'Navion Anglia' (pictured) has commenced the sea passage to Las Palmas with the HiLoad Dynamic Positioning No. 1 safely docked at her port side. Late 2012, Teekay Offshore announced an agreement to acquire this self-propelled dynamic positioning (DP) system that attaches to and keeps conventional tankers in position when loading from offshore installations. Now Teekay say that the HiLoad DP is safely docked to the 'Navion Anglia' and bound for operation at Las Palmas, in the Canary Islands.
Severe Weather Sends Jacksonville Barge Flying
Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville, Fla. command center received notification from Crowley Marine that the 700-foot barge 'Miami' broke loose from its mooring and sideswiped the Crowley Terminal pier and the tugboats 'Ensign' and 'Patriarch'. According to Crowley, the barge broke free of its mooring as a result of severe weather in the area. A Coast Guard investigator and the Sector Jacksonville chief of inspections arrived at the scene.
