The Georgia Ports Authority opened calendar year 2014 with a strong January, achieving gains of 12.5 percent in twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) and 7.3 percent in overall tonnage, compared to January 2013. "We are encouraged by the strong growth in January that continued a trend that began during the fourth quarter and are hopeful these volumes signal a strengthening U.S. and global economy," Foltz said.

While in transit from Jacksonville, Florida to San Juan, Puerto Rico, the crew of Sea Star Line’s El Morro vessel received distress calls from a small fishing vessel in the Atlantic Ocean. The fishing vessel was attempting to hail the U.S. Coast Guard’s Jacksonville Sector with no success due to a weak transmission signal. The U.S. Navy, in partnership with other federal and local agencies, has deployed teams to assess and respond to potential environmental impacts due to the grounding of the Japanese commercial fishing vessel Daiki Maru in outer Apra Harbor Feb. 13. Criminal Gangs Active in Gulf of Guinea

There is very little piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, but criminal gangs are operating widely. Most attacks in West African waters are part of a long running criminal program of cargo theft or kidnapping and ransom inside territorial waters, and not piracy said maritime security company GoAGT. US Maritime Fatalities on the Decline

According to preliminary figures released today by the National Transportation Safety Board, total transportation fatalities in the United States increased by three percent in 2012 from 2011, but deaths in the marine sector declined over the same period. The data indicate that transportation fatalities in all modes totaled 35,531 in 2012, compared to 34,551 in 2011. Although marine, aviation and pipeline, deaths declined, highway and rail fatalities showed an increase.
