BMT to Support NSRP Welding Research Project
BMT Fleet Technology Ltd (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has announced its latest research project with the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) to evaluate recent advancements in Integrated Cold Electrode (ICE) welding technology. Jointly funded by industry and the U.S. Navy through NSRP, this project will look at how this technology can improve productivity rates and reduce the construction costs of both commercial and naval vessels.

The U.S. Navy's aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) completes its largest replenishment-at-sea (RAS) ever with Military Sealift Command dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS Charles Drew (T-AKE 10). New Fuel-Saving 2-Speed Marine Gearbox From Wärtsilä
Engine manufacturer Wärtsilä has launched a new 2-speed marine gearbox, which it says offers notable economic and environmental benefits. The product will serve vessels having multiple operational modes or reduced transit speed, including among others: ropax ferries, offshore support vessels, tug boats, and fishing vessels. Compared to a single mechanical propulsion system, a fuel consumption reduction of eight per cent was verified with Wärtsilä's 2-speed gearbox during sea trials.
Greenpeace Arctic 30 Activists Wait for Permission to Exit Russia
Lawyers for the Arctic 30 have started to lodge applications with Russia's Investigative Committee seeking exit visas for the non-Russian nationals. If the applications are approved, the foreign nationals would be allowed to leave Russia to await ongoing investigations into their Greenpeace International Arctic oil drilling protest. All of the foreign nationals, 26 people from 17 nations, have had their passports returned to them after their release on bail from detention last month.

The European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA) and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) note in a recent report that the use of private armed guards has increased in recent years and become a necessity to ensure safe passage through the risky waters of the Gulf of Aden. ECSA say that they welcome the fact that some EU countries, including Belgium and Italy, have recently adopted legislation which allows vessels flying their flag to use private armed security teams.

The government is to make big changes to the way it subsidises renewable energy, with subsidies for windfarms set to rise at the expense of onshore options, reports BBC News.
