Panama Canal Registers Record Grain Cargo Transits
The Panama Canal is experiencing a strong grain shipping season with dry bulkers registering record grain cargoes during the first two months of the current fiscal year. Based on the analysis by the Panama Canal’s Marketing Division, in October, a total of 5.2 million long tons of grains were transported through the waterway, the highest level recorded since October 2011. In November, tonnage is likely to reach close to the record cargo tonnage of 6.3 million long tons of November 2011.
Bureau Veritas Classes World’s Largest Bilobe LNG Tanks
International classification society Bureau Veritas is classing the world’s largest bilobe gas tanks. They are nearing completion at China’s Sinopacific yard and will be installed in a series of four 27,500 cu m semi-refrigerated LNG/Ethylene carriers building for Denmark’s Evergas. Each of the IMO Type C bilobe tanks has a capacity of 9,686 cu m. Two of the tanks in each vessel will be supplemented by a third conical Type C cargo tank and a smaller LNG fuel tank on the deck of the vessels.
Nontank VRP Regs
The clock is ticking toward the deadline to submit to the U.S. Coast Guard an oil spill response plan that meets the requirements of the NTVRP regulation. The long-awaited nontank vessel response plan (NTVRP) rulemaking was published on September 30, 2013 and came into effect on October 30, 2013. Neither of these are significant dates for the owners, operators, and masters of nontank vessels operating on the navigable waters of the United States. The truly significant date is January 30, 2014.
ReFRESCO: Understanding & Designing Energy Saving Devices
Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), new insights can be obtained into the working principles of Energy Saving Devices (ESDs), which all serve to increase the fuel efficiency of a ship. The advantages of using ReFRESCO to study ESDs are explored in this article. The capability of simulating different moving objects, and their interaction in on calculation (applying the so-called Sliding Interfaces Technique) has increased the range of applications of the viscousflow CFD code ReFRESCO.
