Russia is an energy superpower and the country has vast and rich natural resources. Besides gas and coal reserves (some of the largest in the world), Russia today is ranked as the world’s biggest oil producing nation accounting for well over 12% of the global output. Moreover, the country exports more than 70% of its oil to the world markets. That said, Russia’s output of oil amounts to a third of what collectively the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) produces.
IMCA: Encouraging Responses to 'Competence' Questionnaire

The results of a questionnaire, developed by the International Marine Contractors Association’s (IMCA) Competence & Training Core Committee, aimed at offshore personnel, revealed that 64% of the 276 offshore personnel from over 35 contractor members who responded used a competence scheme. “We were highly encouraged, not only by answers to the questionnaire, but that so many people took part in it,” says Hugh Williams, Chief Executive of IMCA.
Great Lakes Ore Trade Off 7 PCT in September

Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 5.9 million tons in September, a decrease of 7.3 percent compared to August, and 7 percent below the level of a year ago. Shipments were, however, 6.1 percent ahead of September’s 5-year average. Shipments from U.S. ports totaled 5,052,532 tons, a decrease of 10.2 percent compared to a year ago. Included in that total were 360,000 tons shipped to Québec City for final delivery overseas.

Following four months of challenging operations and weather delays, RESOLVE Salvage & Fire, (ASIA) Pte Ltd. has announced completion of the wreck removal of the freighter LPG OBERON from the Taiwan Strait. The Oberon, loaded with volatile Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) 1- Butene, had grounded and sustained extensive hull damage early this year, seven miles from the Penghu archipelago and 30 miles northwest of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

First Permanent Mooring Work for InterMoor in China

InterMoor, an Acteon company, has completed its first permanent mooring work in the Lufeng oilfield, South China Sea. This project was also the company’s first for Chinese installation contractor China Offshore Oil Engineering Co. Ltd. The Nanhai Sheng Kai floating, storage and offloading unit (FSOU) has been in service since 1992, surpassing its 12-year original estimated design life. Consequently, its subsea mooring system had begun to deteriorate and corrode.

The manufacturer has received two orders for a total of nine gantry cranes from West Africa. The parties concerned have declined to reveal the value of the orders. The cranes will have some advanced technologies such as auto steering feature which keeps the crane on a pre-programmed, straight driving path as well as fuel saving technologies. According to Konecranes, the new technologies used help improving safety of operation and increase productivity.
