Seaspan International announced the largest tug build commitment of a single class of vessels in over 35 years. The company signed a contract with Sanmar Denizcilik Shipyard, of Istanbul Turkey; to build four state-of-the-art ship assist tugs. The prime duties for these tugs will be to dock, undock and escort ships in Vancouver Harbor and Roberts Bank. The RAstar 28 m tugs will feature full fire fighting capability and upon arrival will be amongst the most powerful vessels to sail BC waters.
Multraship Takes Delivery of New Damen Tug
Towage and salvage specialist Multraship has bolstered its fleet of specialised tugs and multi-purpose vessels with the addition of the Damen newbuilding ASD 3213 tug Multratug 3. On September 30, the vessel will embark on its delivery voyage from Vietnam, where it was built by Damen Shipyards, to Terneuzen, Multraship’s home port in The Netherlands. Thereafter it will be employed principally in the River Scheldt area in a harbour towage and salvage role.

MV Lugela Abandoned by Pirates in Somali Basin
The Panama flagged MV Lugela, which was reported on 25 September as having been pirated, 900 nautical miles east of Eyl, in the Somali Basin, has been abandoned by pirates. Late on 26 September, the company owning the ship stated that the pirates had abandoned the vessel and that it was now underway to a place of safety. The 12 Ukrainian crew are reported to be safe and EU NAVFOR is monitoring the situation.
Dockwise Delivers First of 15 Modules for Koniambo Project
Dockwise Ltd. has been selected as the contractor of choice for the transport of 15 onshore modules for the Koniambo Nickel Project in New Caledonia. The project is being developed by Koniambo Nickel SAS, a joint venture between Société Minière du Sud Pacifique (SMSP), and Xstrata Nickel. The Koniambo Project includes the construction of a metallurgical facility in the northern part of New Caledonia in the South Pacific.
ACL Expands Warehouse Space Shipping by Barge
American Commercial Lines Inc. (NASDAQ: ACLI) announced that they have entered into an industrial development agreement with CNW Resources of Naperville, Ill. CNW Resources is a provider of metallurgical, chemical and foundry products.
