Major Overhaul of Norwegian Ferry Engine
MAN Diesel recently retrofitted the M/F Geisnes pendulum ferry’s engine to Tier II limits. This retrofit solution achieves a 30% NOx reduction. The MAN 6L23/30 main engine originally installed in M/F Geisnes was built in Frederikshavn, Denmark, in 1988 - and after the delivery of the ferry in 1989, it has served the vessel for 96,842 operating hours. The M/T Nanny, which ran aground in the eastern approach to the Simpson Strait near Gjoa Haven, Nunavut Sept. 1, was successfully refloated early on the morning of Sept. 15. The vessel is seen here with the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Henry Larsen, which has been monitoring the situation along with the Coast Guard's Environmental Response personnel. The refloating effort, which began on Sept. 13, involved the transfer of fuel off the M/T Nanny and onto another Woodward’s ship, the M/T Tuvaq.
Second Sentinel-Class Cutter Contract Option Awarded
The Coast Guard awarded a $166.1m contract option to Bollinger Shipyards of Lockport, La., on September 14 to begin production of four Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutters (FRCs). This option award brings the total number of FRCs under contract with Bollinger to eight with a current contract value of $410.7 million. The current FRC contract contains options for up to 34 cutters and is worth up to $1.5 billion if all options are exercised.
