Great Lakes Seaway Opens 57th Navigation Season
The U.S. and Canadian Seaway Corporations marked the opening of the Seaway's 57th navigation season today, with the transit of the newly-built CWB Marquis through the St. Lambert Lock. The vessel is the first of two Equinox-class lakers ordered by Winnipeg-based grain marketer CWB that are being purpose-built for trade in the Great Lakes Seaway System. In 2014, over 12 million tons of grain moved through the Seaway, the highest volume recorded since the beginning of the 21st century.
Great Lakes Shipyard Awarded Contract for Work Barges by USACE
Great Lakes Shipyard in Cleveland has been awarded a new construction contract by the United States Army Corps of Engineers for two 38-foot work barges, the company announced today. The two new steel work barges will be used by USACE Rock Island District as a working platform to perform maintenance and inspections of lock and dam 11 and 14 on the Upper Mississippi River. The barges will be 38-foot long by 14-foot wide and 3-foot deep.

Flynn Refrigeration has delivered a major package of improvements to the refrigeration and air-conditioning system onboard a vessel used to transport specialist nuclear materials around the world. Working under contract to ship managers, Serco, the UK based-company completed the retrofit and conversion project on International Nuclear Services’ (INS) MV Oceanic Pintail. Scheepswerf Gebr. Kooiman Secures Dredger Conversion Contract
Scheepswerf Gebr. Kooiman BV, a subsidiary of The Kooiman Group (www.thekooimangroup.com), has signed a contract to complete a conversion project for the sea going dredger Ostsee. The Ostsee is a trailing suction hopper dredger and member of the fleet of Maritime Construction Services SA of Luxembourg. It was built by the Peene-Werft in 1995. The conversion involves the replacement of the electrical drives of the dredging installation by direct diesel drives.
