Port Realizes Cruise Passenger Gains in 2013

For the third consecutive year, record numbers of cruise passengers set sail from the Port of New Orleans. Port cruise terminals handled 987,860 embarkations and disembarkations in 2013, up more than 1 percent compared to 2012, which saw a 32 percent gain over 2011. “The positive trend for cruising from New Orleans continues,” said Gary LaGrange, Port President and CEO. Last year, the Port of New Orleans commissioned a study to determine passenger and crew spending in the New Orleans region.

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star successfully completed its breakout of McMurdo Science Station in Antarctica in support of Operation Deep Freeze Wednesday. The cutter assisted by breaking a navigable shipping lane through 12 miles of ice in McMurdo Sound, encountering ice up to 10 feet in thickness. The shipping channel through the ice created by Polar Star was used by the tanker ship Maersk Peary to deliver approximately three and a half million U.S.

Incat Crowther announced that it is designing a fourth vessel for UltraMar of Cancun, Mexico. The 48m catamaran passenger ferry, to be built at Midship Marine in Louisiana, U.S., will operate on UltraMar’s busy Playa de Carmen – Cozumel run. Nordic American Tankers (NAT) published its financial results from 4Q 2013, noting an expected increase in tanker rates that the company expects to play a role in its recovery. In early December 2013 the Suezmax tanker rates increased significantly compared with the average for 2013. A few weeks into 2014 the rates have weakened again. We expect improved results in 1Q 2014. The timecharter results of NAT were slightly lower in 4Q 2013 than in 3Q 2013.
