Aker Shipyard Provides Clarification on Crane Incident

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (APSI), the wholly-owned U.S. subsidiary of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard ASA (AKPS) has released an update regarding an incident that occurred yesterday at its facility. According to Aker, numerous factually incorrect news reports have emerged, and this release was intended to clarify certain points. Aker reported that at approximately 6:50am, maintenance was being performed on the shipyard’s gantry crane when an electrical fault occurred.

The Port’s most historic cargo year (fiscal 2013) yielded a significant economic stimulus, reporting 778 new trade related jobs, $5 million in additional taxes and an additional $90 million in Maritime related economic activity as the Port of Hueneme continues to grow as an economic engine for Ventura County and the region. This announcement comes from a just released 'Economic Impact report for fiscal year 2013' performed by Martin Associates Economic Consulting firm.

“Shipping volumes increased in the fourth quarter. As expected, car volumes improved more than high and heavy volumes," stated Thomas Wilhelmsen, group WWH CEO. Operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2013 was USD 82 million (USD 96 million) based on a total income of USD 893 million (USD 903 million). Sales were NOK 11.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2013, up from NOK 11.2 in the fourth quarter of 2012. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) amounted to NOK 1.06 billion in the quarter, compared with NOK 1.09 billion in the year-earlier period. The prior-year figure includes a gain of NOK 160 million from the sale of real estate. The EBITDA margin was 9.3 percent in the quarter versus 9.7 percent a year earlier.

The 100m long RoRo ferry was launched for the Croatian national shipping company Jadrolinija as the second of a series of 4 such vessels, and the two river barges for Sweden's Wisby Tankers AB. The ferries are designed for two-way direct sailing for the transportation of 600 passengers in summer months or 320 passengers in the winter period in the closed lounge. The ferries will also be able to transport 145 standard vehicles or 16 trailers of 40 tonnes each.

Siem Offshore Inc. say they have signed agreements with Helix Energy Solutions Group, Inc. to provide 2 well-intervention vessels which will be owned by Siem Offshore and chartered by Helix for an initial period of 7 years, with options that can extend the charter periods up to 22 years. The two vessels will be constructed at the Flensburger shipyard in Germany for Siem Offshore, and will be based on a design developed by Salt Ship Design.
