China Homeport for Latest Giant RCI Cruise Ship
Royal Caribbean International says that its latest cruise ship, 'Quantum of the Seas', will make its home port in Shanghai (Baoshan), China The ship will reposition to China in May 2015, following her inaugural winter season sailing out of New York Harbor to the Caribbean. In China, Quantum of the Seas will join Mariner of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas in Asia, increasing the company's capacity in the region by 66 percent.
Shipowners to Become Liable for Costs of Wreck Removal
Shipowner liability is on the horizon as the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal Wrecks will enter into force on 14 April 2015 following the deposit, on 14 April 2014, of an instrument of ratification by Denmark, with the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Among several provisions, the Convention will place financial responsibility for the removal of certain hazardous wrecks on shipowners, making insurance, or some other form of financial security, compulsory.
Coast Guard Pacific Area Command Changeover
The US Coast Guard informs that Rear Adm. Charles W. Ray will relieve Vice Adm. Paul F. Zukunft (US Coast Guard Commander designate) as Commander, Coast Guard Pacific Area and Coast Guard Defense Forces West, in a change-of-command ceremony at Coast Guard Island in Alameda. Zukunft has served as the Pacific Area Commander since April 2012, and is leaving to assume the duties as the Coast Guard Commandant in Washington, D.C., upon Senate confirmation.
CA Port Seeks Public Feedback on Expansion
The Port of San Diego apprises it is to host separate open house events for the public to provide feedback on its long-range vision and 'Integrated Port Master Plan Update' process. The Port of San Diego, the fourth largest in California, is in the midst of developing a 50-year Vision Plan as part of the Port Master Plan Update to help set the course for future land and water uses in San Diego Bay.
Port of LA March 2014 Container Volumes Surge
The Port of Los Angeles has released its March 2014 containerized cargo volume figures, showing that container imports surged 42 percent, from 231,397 TEUsin March 2013 to 327,497 TEUs in March 2014. Exports rose 21 percent, from 154,428 TEUs in March 2013 to 187,826 TEUs in March 2014. The Port explains that in March 2014, overall volumes increased 34 percent compared to March 2013.
