Today in U.S. 1945 - USS Bismarck Sea (CVE-95) struck by a kamikaze off Iwo Jima and sunk in 90 minutes with loss of 318 men. USS Saratoga (CV-3) struck by five kamikazes but survived with loss of 123. Bismarck Sea was last carrier lost in combat during World War II. Panama Canal Locks Project Work Resumes
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said that Grupo Unidos por el Canal. S.A. (GUPC) has resumed work on the new locks project during the afternoon of Thursday, February 20. “Works have restarted this afternoon,” said Panama Canal Administrator Jorge L. Quijano. Since works have resumed, ACP will proceed to pay tomorrow GUPC the $36.8 million due for December invoices. This preliminary agreement to resume works does not imply a negotiation on the alleged cost overruns claimed by the contractor.
HMAS Childers Returns from Indian Ocean

USCG Crew Awarded for Detroit River Rescue

Greek Frigate Joins EU Counter Piracy Operation
Hellenic Navy warship, HS Psara joined EU Naval Force Somalia, Operation Atalanta Wednesday, February 20. The Greek Navy frigate left the Salamina Naval Base on Thursday, February 13. HS Psara will be part of the EU’s counter-piracy operation in the Horn of Africa and Western Indian Ocean for a period of three months. The warship previously participated in EU Naval Force between December 2008 to April 2009. HS Psara is a Hydra class frigate and was commissioned into the Greek Navy in 1998.

First Order for Wärtsilä Slop Water Treatment
The new Wärtsilä slop water treatment system has been ordered for an ultra-deep water drill ship operating in the Gulf of Mexico, marking the first for Wärtsilä’s new system. The contract was signed in the end of 2013. The Wärtsilä slop water treatment system is designed to treat and clean water contaminated with slop or drilling mud. For operators, large volumes of slop mud result in enormous disposal expenses and represent a potentially significant environmental issue.

First of 10 Utility Vessels Delivered
Incat Crowther announced the first deliveries of a 10-boat order for 42m Infield Utility Vessels to Brunei’s PTAS Marine. Developed in conjunction with builder Strategic Marine, the project called upon Incat Crowther’s track record in steel crew boats to meet strict performance criteria. PTAS has been contracted by Brunei Shell Petroleum to build and operate nine vessels to support their offshore platforms for a period of ten years.

Burnaby, BC - based OSI Maritime Systems (OSI) says it has been selected by Lockheed Martin Canada to support the design activity of the bridge and navigation capabilities for the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN) new class of Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS). Lockheed Martin Canada is one of AOPS Prime Contractor Irving Shipbuilding’s Tier 1 suppliers for the AOPS project under the Canadian government’s National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS).

Lake Decatur Dredging Contract for GLDD
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (GLDD) says it has signed an US$89 million contract with the City of Decatur (IL) to provide dredging services to increase the capacity of Lake Decatur. Lake Decatur, the largest lake on the Sangamon River, was created after the river was dammed in 1922. The reservoir serves as the primary raw water source for Decatur’s 76,000 residents and large industrial sector.

The Navy and Lockheed Martin, with Marinette Marine Corp., have held a keel laying ceremony for the future 'USS Sioux City' (LCS 11), the Navy's 11th littoral combat ship (LCS). Ship sponsor Mary Winnefeld, wife of Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral James "Sandy" Winnefeld, Jr., authenticated the keel by having her initials welded into a sheet of the ship's hull. The Nigerian Ship Owners Association, NSA, has informed that some of its members are currently grappling with huge financial indebtedness to some banks, which has been aggregated at over $3billion (N480bn) reports the country's National Mirror. NSA, formerly known as the Indigenous Shipowners Association of Nigeria ISAN, is the umbrella body for all fully Nigerian- owned shipping firms made up of over 40 companies, most of which have closed down or at the verge of being closed down.
