Warship Sails Away for Namesake Port Commissioning Ceremony
The Navy's latest littoral combat ship, the future 'USS Coronado' (LCS 4), has departed from the Austal USA shipyard in Mobile, Ala., en route to her commissioning site in Coronado, Calif. Coronado is the fourth littoral combat ship delivered to the Navy, and the second LCS of the aluminum, trimaran Independence variant. It is scheduled to be commissioned April 5, and will be homeported in San Diego, Calif.
Latest Global Ocean-Going Shipbuilding Round-Up
A relatively active past week in the dry bulk newbuilding market is noted by Clarkson Hellas in their S&P Weekly Bulletin. Oldendorff Carriers have contracted two firm plus two option 208,000 DWT Newcastlemax at Hantong Shipyard, with delivery of all four vessels in 2016. Oldendorff have also declared one further option at Jiangsu New Yangzijiang and two options at Taizhou CATIC all for 208,000 DWT Newcastlemax and delivering in 2016.
Scorpio Tankers Sell Two, Receive New MR Tankship
Monaco-based Scorpio Tankers says it has entered into agreements to sell its two 2004 built, LR1 product tankers, 'Noemi' and 'Senatore' and has also taken delivery of a MR product tanker newbuilding, 'STI Duchessa', from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co., Ltd. of South Korea. The sales of the two 2004-built tankships for altogether US$44 million are expected to close in April 2014. The new vessel, STI Duchessa, is fixed to be chartered out for up to 120 days at approximately $19,000 per day.
Atlantic Air Force Rowers Rescued by Amver Ship
The crew of four British Royal Air Force personnel (2 men and 2 women) from 216 Squadron and 47 Squadron based at Royal Air Force Brize Norton, competing in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, have been rescued by the AMVER particating ship MV Hedvik Bulker. The four were rowing from San Sebastian de la Gomera, Tenerife when when they developed rudder problems and alerted rescue authorities in Falmouth, UK who in turn notified U.S. Coast Guard rescue personnel in Sector San Juan.
China Shipbuilder Delivers One More Supramax Bulker
COSCO Corporation (Singapore) say that their COSCO Guangdong shipyard has delivered the 57,000 dwt bulk carrier 'Ionnnis G' to its European buyer. The new bulk carrier measures 189.99 meters in LOA, 32.26 meters in breadth and 18 meters in depth. Founded in June 2001, COSCO Shipyard Group Co., Ltd, is a subsidiary of China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO), specializing in large vessels building, marine engineering and ship construction and conversion.
MV Cape Ray Departs: Chemical Effluent Will Not by Discharged in Sea
The U.S. Department of Defense announce that the deployment of 'M/V Cape Ray' from Portsmouth, Va. 'M/V Cape Ray' is the primary contribution of the Department of Defense toward international efforts to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons material program. All waste from the hydrolysis process on M/V Cape Ray will be safely and properly disposed of at commercial facilities to be determined by the OPCW. No hydrolysis byproducts will be released into the sea or air.
Crude Oil Spill in Delaware River: Boom Deployed
Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay watchstanders received notification of the spill at approximately 1 p.m. Monday (local time) after the National Response Center informed of an estimated 1,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the Delaware River near Monroe Energy LLC, located about one mile south of the Commodore Barry Bridge. A boom is deployed to contain the oil while responders use skimmers and vacuums to remove the oil from the water.

Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, has delivered the first of six Chesapeake Class pilot boats for coastal and offshore patrol operations and port security, provided by the Colombian Department of the Navy.
