Delaware River Dredging Contract for GLD&D
Great Lakes Dredge and Dock LLC, Oak Brook, Ill., has been awarded a $14,177,652 firm-fixed-price contract by USACE for deepening the main channel of the Delaware River. The US Department of Defense estimate the completion date to be Nov. 30, 2014 and the contracting authority was Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia, Pa. The company claims it is the largest provider of dredging services in the United States and the only U.S. dredging service provider with significant international operations.
Grand Banks Iceberg Warning System Activates for 2014
The U.S. Coast Guard International Ice Patrol (IIP) announce it is scheduled to take over responsibility Wednesday for issuing daily iceberg warnings for the North Atlantic Ocean marking the beginning of the 2014 Ice Season. In early February, the IIP will deploy the first ice reconnaissance detachment to Newfoundland, Canada to meet with Canadian partners and to conduct the initial aerial patrols of the season. Technip say they have been awarded a contract by Dubai Petroleum Establishment (DPE) covering the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of the Jalilah B field development project, located nearly 90 kilometers offshore Dubai (United Arab Emirates, UAE), at water depth reaching 60 meters. Technip’s scope of work consists of the construction and installation of the Jalilah B platform, a 900-ton deck, a 500-ton jacket, as well as 13 new risers(2) on existing platforms.

The Board of Trustees of the Galveston Wharves has approved a 5 year agreement with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., that will generate a minimum US$1.86-million in annual operating revenues for the Port of Galveston. The Port explains that the agreement requires making improvements to the Port's Cruise Terminal No. 2 to accommodate larger vessels and more passengers. Initial plans are to increase the size of the terminal, expanding it to 150,000 square feet with the capacity to seat about 1,000.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced the deployment of M/V Cape Ray from Portsmouth, Va., Jan. 27. M/V Cape Ray is the primary contribution of the Department of Defense toward international efforts to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons material program. DNV GL Reports on the Future of Fuels
DNV GL has released a position paper on the future alternative fuel mix for global shipping. While LNG is expected to be an early success, the picture becomes more diversified with time, as more than 20 percent of shipping could adopt hybrid propulsion solutions, featuring batteries or other energy storage technologies. The main drivers for the use of alternative fuels are the desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the need to meet upcoming air pollution requirements.
