Today in U.S. 1918 - Ensign David S. Ingalls, USNR, in a Sopwith Camel, shoots down his fifth enemy aircraft, becoming the first U.S. Navy ace while flying with the British Royal Air Force. 1960 - First nuclear powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise (CVAN-65), launched at Newport News, Va. Second Meteorological Mast Installed at Dogger Bank
Offshore wind developer Forewind’s second of two planned meteorological masts was erected at Dogger Bank during the weekend using the innovative suction installed Bucket Foundation and a “human free” technique for the steel tower placement. The latest mast to be installed – Dogger Bank Met Mast West - will provide essential wind, wave and other weather information, as well as marine traffic data for the Dogger Bank offshore wind energy development.

Employed by more than 230 professionals in more than 20 countries, HydroComp PropExpert is the industry’s most widely used propeller sizing tool for inboard-driven workboats and pleasure craft. First introduced in 1996, PropExpert was principally developed to provide a reliable technical tool for the propeller sales process. It is used for application sizing and performance assessment by manufacturers and distributors of marine propellers, engines and transmissions.
Northrop Grumman Environmental Efforts Recognized
Northrop Grumman Corporation has been recognized as a leader for the company's actions to reduce carbon emissions, mitigate the risks of climate change and for the quality of its climate change data by CDP on two of its listings. The achievement was announced in the CDP S&P 500 Climate Change Report 2013, which tracks how America's largest listed companies are acting in response to environmental sustainability.
ABB Wins $25m Order for Two Russian Icebreakers
ABB, a power and automation technology group, has won an order worth around $25 million to supply its marine propulsion system, Azipod, and complete electric power plants for two new rescue and salvage icebreakers that are under construction at Nordic Yards GmbH in Germany. The new vessels, owned by Russia’s State Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (SMRCC), will be used for patrols and rescue operations in offshore oil-and-gas fields.
Shipowners Call for Sustainable Regulation
The global trade association for the shipping industry, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), has called for all future proposals for environmental regulation that impact on ships to be subjected to a full and proper cost benefit analysis before adoption by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). ICS has set out how the shipping industry supports the goals for sustainable development agreed by world leaders at last year’s United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development.
Liebherr Wins Significant Ship Crane Order
Liebherr reports that there has been a positive trend in the heavy lift crane segement, a sentiment confirmed by a number of significant contracts recorded of late, including a contract for the delivery of six heavy lift ship cranes for the German shipping company Rickmers. Four of the heavy lift cranes are type CBB 4700 with a lifting capacity of 450 tons and the remaining two are type CBB 3450 with a lifting capacity of 120 tons.
