“AIDAcara” is first to call at the Ostseekai Terminal. The 2013 cruise shipping year opened in Kiel on April 13 when the first ship of the season, AIDAcara, arrived at the Ostseekai from Dover. She berthed at around 0900 at the cruise shipping terminal after earlier being treated to a water fountain display from an SFK tug when she left the Kiel Canal. U.S. Coast Guard Reactivates High Year Tenure
U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp announced Monday that the service has reactivated High Year Tenure to address delayed opportunities for enlisted advancement. The decision to reactivate High Year Tenure was motivated by personnel retention rates of more than 94%, waiting periods of more than three years for “A” Schools for most enlisted ratings, a slowdown in enlisted advancement, and a reduction in enlisted billets during past fiscal year due to budget constraints.

U.S. Navy Names Research Vessel to Honor Sally Ride
U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced the nation's newest research vessel will be named R/V Sally Ride, in honor of the former UC San Diego faculty member who was the first American female astronaut and the youngest American to fly in space. Aker Arctic to Design Icebreaker for Finnish Government
The Finnish Transport Agency signed a contract with Aker Arctic Technology Oy for design of a new icebreaker for the government. Aker Arctic in cooperation with ILS Oy will design the vessel and prepare the technical documents needed to hold tender for its construction in compliance with the performance requirements for the vessel, and will assist the Finnish Transport Agency in negotiations with shipyards later this autumn.
Braemar Opens Crude and Products Ship Broking Operation
Braemar Seascope said it is strengthening its ship broking activities by opening a new division within the group’s Houston offices focusing on the large crude and products tanker trades. The new operation will launch following the employment of four tanker brokers: Nelson Hebert, Clint DeAtley, Chip Kelman and John Anderson have all come across town to the Braemar office. They will be joined by ex-MJLF broker and past Tanker Pacific chartering executive, Lynne Rutherford.
