New Icebreaker Could Keep Northern Sea Route Open

Russia's Baltic Shipyard starts construction of the first LK-60 nuclear-powered icebreaker. The LK-60 will be the largest and most powerful icebreaker ever built, making commercial traffic along the Northern Sea Route possible all year around. According to Barents Observer, Russia will have a large demand for new nuclear-powered icebreakers in the near future. Of the existing six vessels that are operating in Arctic waters today only one will be operational by 2020.

Aberdeen (Scotland) based global shipping and energy services firm, Craig Group, has announced healthy results for the year ending April 2012. The privately owned, family-run business has reported turnover of £123.3 million with operating profits of £14.8 million. This is an increase on their 2011 turnover of £11.4 million and a £1.7 million increase on operating profit from the same time period. EBITDA has risen from £19.1million in 2011 to £21.3millionin 2012.

Amphibious ship 'USS Anchorage' (LPD 23) transits the Panama Canal while in 4th Fleet's area of operations for the first time. USS Anchorage departed the Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) Shipbuilding site in Avondale, La. Oct. 30, 2012 to sail to her future homeport of San Diego. With a beam measuring 105 feet, Anchorage, a San Antonio-class LPD, is among the largest class of ships able to safely pass through the canal, whose locks measure 110 feet. She completed the transit in 13 hours.

Port of Los Angeles report that container volumes Increased .82% in October this year; up 4.69% compared to October 2011. Imports decreased 1.07 percent, from 368,842 Twenty-Foot Equivalent (TEU) containers in October 2011 to 364,881 TEUs this October. Exports decreased 7.10 percent, from 193,547 TEUs in October 2011 to 179,810 TEUs in October 2012. Combined, total loaded imports and exports for October decreased 3.15 percent, from 562,390 TEUs last October to 544,692 TEUs in October 2012.
