Developing Better Marine Inspectors
The Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment (MSD) Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and the Washington Island Ferry Line (WIFL) located in Washington Island, Wisconsin teamed up to create a Small Passenger Vessel (SPV) industry training program for Coast Guard Marine Inspectors. Early this summer WIFL’s President, Mr. Dick Purinton, and Lieutenant Jerry Butwid of MSD Sturgeon Bay, met to create the training program to provide marine inspectors with a better understanding of the industry they regulate.
Hand-over of Su Tu Vang CPP
J. Ray McDermott, S. A. announced the handover of the Su Tu Vang Central Processing Platform for CuuLong Joint Operating Company (CLJOC) offshore Vietnam to enable production of first oil ahead of schedule. The project sets a benchmark in the industry for fabrication completion of a 15,500MT float-over deck in 22.5 months. The accomplishment was celebrated at the Su Tu Vang first oil ceremony held in Hanoi.

26 GE Diesels to Power Panama Canal Tugboats
GE Transportation will supply Marinsa, Panama, with 26 V228 diesel engines. The 12-cylinder engines will power 13 new tugboats to be used in the Panama Canal in Panama. “This is a significant order for GE, the largest we’ve received to date in Latin America. We faced stiff competition in the marketplace and are delighted that ultimately our V228 engines were selected for this project,” said John Manison, manager of GE Transportation’s marine and stationary power business, Erie, Pennsylvania.

NASSCO’s New Product Carrier Goes to Sea
The M/T Golden State departed on her inaugural sea trials on December 3. The 600 ft ship was built in San Diego by General Dynamics NASSCO and is scheduled to be delivered to U.S. Shipping Partners in January 2009. The Golden State is the first ship of the “State” class and will be used in coastal trade, carrying petroleum and chemical products. (www.nassco.com)
