Asean’s 1st Submarine Support Vessel
Singapore Technologies Marine Ltd (ST Marine), the marine arm of ST Engineering, successfully launched Swift Rescue, Asean’s first Submarine Support and Rescue Vessel (SSRV) on Saturday, 29 November 2008 at its main yard in Benoi. ST Marine had conceptualized, designed and built Swift Rescue to enable it with the primary capability of submarine rescue as well as fulfill other secondary roles. This 279 ft by 59 ft vessel is highly maneuverable with excellent sea-keeping capabilities.
Newbold Wins Entrepreneur Award
Strategic Marine chairman and founder Mark Newbold has won an Ernst & Young Australian Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Mr. Newbold, whose shipbuilding company has its headquarters at Henderson in Western Australia, took out the national Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Products Category at a black tie event on Nov. 27 in Sydney. Mr. Newbold founded Strategic Marine in 2001 with the goal of building a shipbuilding company with manufacturing operations across the world.

UK’s Royal Navy Launches HMS Dragon
The Royal Navy’s latest addition to the Type 45 destroyer fleet, to be called HMS Dragon, pulled into the Clyde from BVT’s shipyard at Govan on Nov. 17, 2008. As well as providing air defense over a wide area, including for the future aircraft carriers, the Type 45s will be able to conduct a variety of operations. They will be able to carry up to sixty Royal Marines Commandos and their equipment and operate a Chinook sized helicopter from the flight deck.

Pirates Fire on Ocean Cruise Vessel
Ocean Cruises Inc. released a statement on an attempted act of piracy against one of its cruise ships. On November 30, 2008, at approximately 0928 local time, 0528 GMT, M/S Nautica was transiting through the Gulf of Aden within the prescribed Maritime Safety Protection Area which is patrolled by international anti-piracy task forces. As the vessel sailed past several groups of non-hostile fishing vessels, two small skiffs were sighted by the Officer on Duty and deemed potentially hostile.
