FLNG Prelude: A New Dawn in the Age of Maritime & Energy
Longer than four football fields, as big as six Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and almost as tall as the Taipei 101 skyscraper, Royal Dutch Shell PLC is hoping that its record-setting, game-changing floating liquid natural gas (FLNG) facility will serve as a prelude to a killing in the offshore LNG market. It’s not alone. Many industry observers believe FLNG will do for gas offshore what fracking has done for shale or natural gas trapped in the ground on shore.

VOSTA LMG Delivers New Dredge Ball Joints
The Crossover ball joint is a new dredge ball joint that provides optimal flow performance, its manufacturer VOSTA LMG said. Through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) the frictional losses and turbulence have been reduced. Conventional dredge ball joints act like a ball valve when tilted, causing the flow area to reduce and frictional losses to increase. The patented Crossover design incorporates two wear liners which are shaped to provide full flow area in any tilted position.
US House Asks for Lakes Dredge Funds Increase
The U.S. House of Representatives has sent another clear signal that it is committed to ending the dredging crisis on the Great Lakes, introducing an amendment to the Energy & Water Appropriations bill that mandates that the Great Lakes Navigation System gets the 10 percent of increased funding for dredging that is promised in the Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2014 that was passed seven weeks ago.
Lakes Water Levels Return, but Not Full Loads
The rise in Great Lakes water levels has yet to translate into full loads for the U.S.-flag freighters moving iron ore, coal, limestone, cement and other cargos. Vessels continue to routinely leave port with less than a full load on board. The largest iron ore cargo moved by a U.S.-flag laker through the Soo Locks in June totaled 69,576 tons. The record iron ore cargo for the “Head-of-the-Lakes Trade” is 72,300 tons and was carried in 1997, a period of near record-high water levels.

Demand for Coastal and Transoceanic ATBs Grows
Along the way, ATBs gain speed, efficiency, safety – and popularity. Operators of articulated tugs and barges, or ATBs, say they like the maneuverability, weather reliability, stability, speed of these units, and the manner in which the tug pushes the barge. As a marine transportation concept, they can also simply be described as versatile. ATBs move petroleum, chemicals, coal, grain, containerized cargo and rail cars for customers on the U.S. coasts, rivers, the Great Lakes and overseas.
