Svanehøj Launches High-Pressure Ammonia Fuel Pump
Marine pump specialist Svanehøj has launched what it claims is the world’s first high-pressure centrifugal pump for ammonia fuel applications. The HP NH3 Fuel Pump delivers a fuel injection pressure of up to 100 BAR. It is based on the design of Svanehøj’s patented deepwell low-pressure fuel pump, a centrifugal low-pressure pump, which has sold more than 1,000 units since its introduction, with 100 of those units being used for ammonia.
Study: Compressed Hydrogen Beats Ammonia on Capital and Energy Efficiency
Provaris Energy has completed a study for bulk-scale hydrogen export and import compression facilities that it says confirms the viability the low energy use and low capital of Provaris’ compressed hydrogen supply chain for regional marine transport of hydrogen in gaseous form. The study, the fourth in a series of techno-economic studies developed by Provaris, was based on a 540MW capacity reservation export site…
ClassNK Publishes Onboard Ammonia Leak Estimates
ClassNK has published industry-first estimated leak frequencies for ammonia fuel from onboard components for ammonia-fueled ships. For new ammonia-fueled ship designs, risk assessments involve the consideration of the probability of ammonia leak from each component. However, statistical data of onboard ammonia leak have been extremely limited, making probability estimation difficult.ClassNK, in collaboration with the Research Institute of Science for Safety and Sustainability (RISS)…
HEAVY HAULER: Andreas Rolner Powers UHL Ahead
Just shy of 10 years old, United Heavy Lift (UHL) recently welcomed its 19th ship to the fleet, an F900 eco-lifter. In advance of the ship delivery festivities in mid-July, we had the chance to chat with Andreas Rolner, Managing Director of UHL, a man who with his father parlayed cumulative experience in the heavy lift business into one of the world’s largest heavy lift companies.“Shipping has always been a part of my DNA…
Eastern Pacific Shipping Chooses Gas Injection Engines for Newbuilds
New Times Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. of Jiangsu province, China, has ordered 12 × 8G95ME-GI (Gas Injection) Mk10.5 main engines in connection with the construction of 12 × 18,000 teu container vessels for Singapore’s Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS).MAN Energy Solutions says the Diesel principle provides the ME-GI engine with high operational stability and efficiency, while also ensuring reliable operation during load changes on gas with just normal additions of pilot-oil amounts.
AiP Granted for Ammonia Release Mitigation System
Azane Fuel Solutions has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV for its Ammonia Release Mitigation System (ARMS).The approval comes as Azane Fuel Solutions continue to develop technologies to safely handle ammonia as a fuel on board ships and builds on the company’s expertise within ammonia bunkering solutions. The Azane ARMS is connected to the vessel’s fuel and engine systems. It gathers the…
Meet the CTO: Dr. Gunnar Stiesch, MAN Energy Solutions
As the shipowners stare down decarbonization mandates that grow increasingly strict through 2050, the engine makers are at the tip of the spear of this energy transition phenomena, working to design and build engines and components that are built to operate on a long and growing list of alternative fuels. We recently visited with Dr. Gunnar Stiesch, CTO, MAN Energy Solutions, to take a look inside the research and development process at this global power leader…

“K” LINE, MOL, NYK Line, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, Imabari Shipbuilding, JMU, and Nihon Shipyard have started a joint study to establish standard specifications and…
Ammonia Fuelled Platform Supply Vessels to Cut GHG Emissions 70%
Eidesvik Offshore will refit its platform supply vessel (PSV) Viking Energy with an ammonia dual fuel engine, targeting 2026 as the year that the vessel will operate on ammonia for Equinor, effectively cutting GHG emissions by 70% or more.Viking Energy will switch to ammonia operations, in a move that should make it the world’s first in-service vessel to adopt the fuel as a primary energy source."This conversion is made possible by the support and investment from Equinor.
Ammonia-fueled Tugboat ‘Sakigake’ to be Classed by ClassNK
ClassNK has classed the ammonia-fueled tugboat ‘Sakigake’ completed by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) and IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. as an ammonia-fueled vessel. This is the world's first ammonia-fueled vessel for commercial use (as of August 23, 2024, according to research by NYK). The NYK Group company Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha will employ the vessel in tugboat operations in Tokyo Bay over…
Ammonia-Fueled Tugboat Ready for Operation
NYK’s ammonia-fueled tugboat Sakigake is commencing operation in Tokyo Bay.The vessel was the subject of a conversion project undertaken by NYK and IHI Power Systems, in cooperation with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), and will be the world's first ammonia-fueled tugboat in commercial use.It is undertaking a three-month demonstration for NYK Group company Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha. The vessel’s predecessor…
China’s Largest Ports Suited to Green Shipping Corridors
A new study from the International Council on Clean Transportation has investigated the feasibility of establishing green shipping corridors for China’s coastal shipping. The researchers assessed whether the ships could be powered by renewable hydrogen, methanol, ammonia or batteries without the need to refuel en route. They concluded that the technological feasibility of applying renewable marine fuels on China’s coastal shipping routes is high…
World First: Machine Room Safety Accreditation for Ammonia Fueled Vessel
The world’s first accreditation* for “Machinery Room Safety for Ammonia” (MRS) will be granted by ClassNK for the ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier (AFMGC) currently being developed by a consortium that includes Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. (NSY). MRS is Class notation demonstrating a ship is equipped with excellent ammonia safety measures for the machinery room.

ICS Wants “Feebate” Solution for 2050 Targets
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), working with the governments of Bahamas and Liberia, is proposing a “feebate” (rewards) mechanism to ensure delivery of the IMO’s target to achieve net zero GHG emissions from international shipping by or around 2050.At the heart of the proposal is a GHG Fee, charged to ships per tonne of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emitted, combined with a “feebate” mechanism to incentivize the accelerated production and uptake of zero/near-zero GHG marine fuels…
