Port of Long Beach Offers Scholarships to HS Seniors
For many high school seniors, the thought of college can be financially intimidating. The Port of Long Beach said it is committed to supporting students by providing scholarships to those pursuing careers in international trade, goods movement or other port-related industries. Scholarship applications will be available for high school seniors starting Tuesday, Sept. 2 through Friday, Jan. 16, 2015.
Port of Long Beach Raises Small Business Commitment
The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners – seeking to expand opportunities for a wider range of vendors, contractors and consultants – has set a higher goal for the Port of Long Beach to buy goods and services from small and very small businesses. Historically, the port has succeeded in meeting a 25 percent small business participation goal, which led to the recent Harbor Commission approval of a goal increase to 27 percent for the upcoming fiscal year, beginning October 1.

Port of Long Beach June Cargo Numbers Flat
Cargo volume rose slightly in June at the Port of Long Beach compared to the same month one year ago, while year-to-date figures show an increase of 14.2 percent for the first half of 2013 compared to the first half of 2012. A total of 565,476 TEUs (or twenty-foot equivalent container units) were moved in June, up 1.8 percent from the same month last year. Imports increased 3.5 percent to 290,448 TEUs. Exports were up by 0.1 percent to 133,800 TEUs.

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has selected Michael Gold as Director of Communications & Community Relations for the Port of Long Beach, beginning in mid-July. Port of Long Beach Buys New Temporary HQ
Board approves move to temporary headquarters at 4801 Airport Plaza Drive. The Port's administrative staff of about 350 people is expected to move to Airport Plaza in 2013. The Board stressed that the move is temporary, and that discussions will begin soon on building a permanent headquarters in or near downtown Long Beach. The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved a $649.5 million contract with a joint venture team headed by Shimmick Construction Co. Inc., FCC Construction S.A. and Impregilo S.p.A. (SFI) for the design and construction of a replacement for the Port of Long Beach’s obsolete and deteriorating Gerald Desmond Bridge. Final design and engineering will begin shortly, and construction of the new bridge is to start in 2013 and is scheduled for completion in 2016.
