Port of Long Beach Trade Dipped in 2016
Slowed by industry headwinds and challenges that included major customer Hanjin declaring bankruptcy, the Port of Long Beach said it moved almost 6.8 million containers in 2016, its fifth best year ever. Overall cargo declined 5.8 percent in 2016 compared to 2015, as the Port was impacted by new ocean carrier alliances and the August bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping, a South Korean company and former majority stakeholder at the 381-acre Pier T container terminal — Long Beach’s largest.
Port of Long Beach CEO Resigns
Port of Long Beach CEO Jon Slangerup announced his resignation, effective October 28, 2016. Slangerup will step down as head of the nation’s second largest port to take a position as Chairman and CEO of an aviation technology company effective October 31, 2016. Soon after joining the port in June of 2014, Slangerup helped address the major congestion challenge that affected the San Pedro Bay port complex and the national goods movement network.

Port of Long Beach Sponsors Logistics Academy
At its third annual Celebrating Education event, held at McBride High School on Thursday, May 12, the Port of Long Beach recognized scholarship and high school internship recipients and announced a new initiative to broaden its educational outreach through a specialized academy at Cabrillo High School, which is located in the vicinity of the Port. The Port of Long Beach Academy of Global Logistics was announced by Harbor Commission Vice President Lou Anne Bynum at the event.
Port of Long Beach Starts Strong in 2016
Cargo shipments at the Port of Long Beach were up 6.1 percent for the first three months of 2016 compared to the same period last year, starting the year off strongly. Lifted by big gains in January and February, the quarter was the port’s best since 2007. While March 2015 volumes soared 32 percent over the same month in 2014 due to the exceptional recovery from cargo backlogs early last year, March 2016’s container volumes were down 26.2 percent.

Port of Long Beach Sees Best October in 8 Years
The docks continued to be busy at the Port of Long Beach in October as cargo volume rose 6.3 percent compared to the same month last year, making for the best October in eight years, the port reported. The gains also come on the heels of the top quarter in the port’s 104-year history. Strong export growth of 6.5 percent in October buoyed the port’s overall numbers as shippers turned to the Port of Long Beach.

Port of Long Beach Reports Strong May
Cargo rose at the Port of Long Beach by 6 percent in May, the third consecutive month of growth, the busiest month since October 2007, and the busiest May since 2006. A total of 635,250 TEUs of containerized cargo were moved through the port in May. Imports numbered 327,317 TEUs, a 4.8 percent increase from the same month last year. Exports decreased 7.4 percent to 135,855 TEUs. Empty containers rose 22.6 percent to 172,078 TEUs.

Cargo container trade at the Port of Long Beach climbed 1.3 percent in 2014, indicating continued economic growth for the U.S. and bringing the port its third-busiest year ever behind the peak years of 2006 and 2007, the port announced. Last year’s overall volume rose to 6,820,806 TEUs or twenty-foot equivalent units. Imports increased 1.8 percent to 3,517,514 TEUs, exports declined 5.9 percent to 1,604,394 TEUs, while empties rose 8.2 percent to 1,698,898 TEUs.

Port of Long Beach Working to Relieve Congestion
Acting to relieve cargo delivery delays, the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners on Thursday approved the use of Port of Long Beach property as a temporary site for the storage of empty containers, which will help to free up needed equipment to move cargo out of shipping terminals faster. The “Temporary Empty Container Depot” will be operated on 30 acres of a vacant, undeveloped area on Pier S on Terminal Island.
