The ALERT system consists of a water-activated transmitter worn on a lifejacket and a receiver installed in a wheelhouse.
Retrofit VDRs for Diamond S Tanker Fleet
Danelec Marine and global distributor Mackay Marine are nearing completion of a Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) retrofit program for Diamond S Shipping’s fleet of 30 medium-range product tankers. Mackay is installing Danelec’s new-generation DM100 VDRs on the ships as replacements for the existing VDRs, which had been installed at construction. The original products were nearing the end of their service life and were becoming very expensive to maintain.
Fishing Vessel Sees Large Fuel Savings
The 305-foot factory trawler f/v Golden Alaska is powered by twin MAK six-cylinder engines and has a large boiler used to support large fishmeal-fish oil processor and hoteling galley needs of the 130-person crew and factory personnel. The vessel is in its fourth year and eighth pollock season using the Fitch Fuel Catalyst on output of dual centrifuges for a 5,300-gallon day tank. They get approximately 18 months service from each core and now are on their third one.
Djibouti, CMA CGM in Talks to Develop New Container Terminal

Baltic Index Slips on Lower Vessel Demand
The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, closed lower on Tuesday, as demand fell across vessel segments. The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax and supramax shipping vessels, closed down nine points, or 0.8 percent, at 1,117 points. The capesize index finished lower by six points, or 0.5 percent, at 1,191 points.

Australia Bans Containership over Unpaid Wages
Liberian-flagged containership MSC Kia Ora has been banned from Australian ports for three months after the operator failed to ensure crew were paid their wages in full and on time, and that critical equipment was maintained. The ban was issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), who inspected the ship in the Port of Brisbane on March 14, 2018 after receiving a complaint which alleged that crew had been underpaid.
