Oil Backlog Off China Limits Prospects for Fresh Atlantic Basin Shipments
A backlog of crude cargoes has built up off the coast of China, limiting prospects for new shipments to the world's largest oil importer, trading and shipping sources said. The amount of oil floating in tankers off China has risen partly due to tax changes and an anti-pollution drive that have depressed oil demand from small, independent refiners, known as "teapots". Maintenance has curtailed run rates at others.

Baltic Index Records Worst March Since 2009
The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, suffered on Thursday its biggest percentage fall in March since 2009 on weaker demand for capesize vessels. The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax and supramax shipping vessels, closed down 25 points or 2.3 percent at 1,055 points. The Baltic index fell 11.5 percent this month, its worst performance in March since 2009.
Coast Guard Raises Marine Casualty Reporting Threshold
The U.S. Coast Guard has raised the decades-old monetary threshold for reporting marine casualties in order to keep pace with inflation and reduce reporting of minor incidents. The final rule changes, which were published March 19 and take effect April 18, 2018, lift the reportable marine casualty property damage threshold amount from $25,000 to $75,000 and raise the serious marine incident property damage threshold from $100,000 to $200,000.

New Rescue Vessel Delivered to Sentinel Marine
Aberdeen headquartered Sentinel Marine said it has taken delivery of the latest in its fleet of multi-role emergency response and rescue vessels (ERRVs). Biscay Sentinel was delivered at the Cosco Guangzhou shipyard in China this month and is expected to arrive in Aberdeen in early May. She will immediately join Sentinel Marine’s fleet of ERRVs providing support and lifesaving services to the oil and gas industry in the North Sea.
More MTU Engines Destined for Majestic Ferry in Singapore
Rolls-Royce is to supply more MTU engines to fast ferry operator Majestic Ferry in Singapore. Designed by Incat Crowther, a total of seven new fast ferries are being built at PT Cahaya shipyard in Batam, Indonesia over the next two years.
