Seatrade Convicted for Scrapping Ships on Indian Beach
The Dutch shipping company Seatrade and two of its directors were found guilty by a Dutch court on Thursday of illegally sailing ships to India to have them demolished, the first criminal case of its kind in the Netherlands. The company and the directors were fined up to 750,000 euros ($925,275). The directors were also banned from executive roles at any shipping company for a year. They did escape the prison sentences prosecutors had asked for.
Libya Seizes Tanker Suspected of Fuel Smuggling
Libya's naval forces seized a Togo-flagged fuel tanker and arrested its Greek crew on suspicion they planned to smuggle oil out of the North African country, a spokesman for the forces said on Thursday. Libya's western coast is a departure point for the smuggling of heavily subsidised gasoline to neighbours such as Tunisia and Malta, where retail prices are much higher. Baltic Index Falls on Muted Capesize Activity
The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index fell for the fourth straight session on Thursday, as subdued activity in the Pacific and Atlantic markets dragged the capesize index down to 7-1/2 month lows. The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax and supramax shipping vessels that ferry dry bulk commodities, fell to its lowest in three weeks. Damen Shipyards Group has recently unveiled a Water Injection Dredger (WID), courtesy of a plug & play system aboard a Damen Multi Cat.
