Teekay’s New Shuttle Tanker Delivered
Teekay Offshore said it has taken delivery of Beothuk Spirit, the first of three new shuttle tankers to serve East Coast Canada, built in Korea by Samsung Heavy Industries. Gondan Launches First of Four New Ferries for Baleària
The first of four new catamaran ferries being constructed by Gondan for owner Baleària has been launched by the shipyard's GRP Division. The four ferries, which are due to be delivered between the end of this year and the middle of 2018, are designed to operate on short distance trips in the Balearic Islands. According to the builder, the 28-meter-long GRP ecofast ferries have capacity for 350 passengers and are designed focusing on eco-efficiency, comfort and speed during navigation.
W. Africa Crude: Spot Trade Slows with Flurry of Tenders
Spot trade in west African crude slowed on Friday after a few Indian and Indonesian tenders were issued, though demand was seen recovering after a month in the doldrums with traders looking to do deals ahead of the year end. Demand was muted for November loading due to competing, cheaper alternative U.S. crude exports that have been going increasingly to Asia. Angola's state firm Sonangol was offering a cargo of Olombendo loading Dec. 17 and a cargo of Dalia for Dec. 19-20.
Smith Maritime Hauls Equipment to Puerto Rico
Smith Maritime recently hauled a barge load of equipment on behalf of CAT5 Resources to help rebuild cellular communication infrastructure in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Smith Maritime’s barge Marilyn Monroe was loaded at its terminal in Amelia, La. with vehicles, housing, bulk fuel, food and most importantly, self-powered cellular communication towers to reestablish communication on the island.
M/V Harvey Blue-Sea Delivered
Harvey Gulf International Marine has taken delivery of M/V Harvey Blue-Sea, a new large capacity, Jones Act qualified multipurpose support vessel (MPSV) from Eastern Shipbuilding Group. With the delivery of the 340-foot Harvey Blue-Sea, which follows sister vessel M/V Harvey Sub-Sea delivered in July 2017, Harvey Gulf said it now owns and operates the two largest U.S. flag construction vessels in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
Rolls-Royce Debuts Cloud-based Energy Management Module
Rolls-Royce has unveiled a ‘cloud-based’ fuel consumption and carbon dioxide monitoring module designed to help ship owners meet the European Union’s Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) regulation. Starting January 1, 2018, collection and reporting of voyage data will become a mandatory, as owners of vessels over 5,000 gross metric tons that call at European Union ports will be required to monitor, report and verify their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Vard to Build Vessel for Midt-Norsk Havbruk
Vard Holdings Limited said it has secured a contract to build a new aquaculture service vessel for Midt-Norsk Havbruk in Norway. The vessel is scheduled for Q2 2018 delivery from Vard Aukra in Norway, who has previously delivered a live fish treatment barge to the same customer. The new vessel has been developed by Midt-Norsk Havbruk in close cooperation with Marin Design and is specially designed for fish farming operations.
Wallem, USCG Work to Enhance Safety at Sea
Two U.S. Coast Guard marine inspectors were welcomed on board the Wallem-managed vessel MT Tofteviken as part of the U.S. Coast Guard Ship Rider Program aimed at ensuring and enhancing safety and security at sea by enabling USCG marine inspectors to experience operations on tanker work firsthand. Wallem said it is one of the few ship management companies to have offered this learning experience for the USCG marine inspectors.
Caterpillar Launches Multi-Engine Optimizer Tool
Caterpillar Marine has unveiled its new Multi-Engine Optimizer (MEO) tool, which leverages proprietary performance data and patented control algorithms to provide intelligence for power management systems. MEO works by advising power management systems on which engines to operate and enables the use of dynamic asymmetric loads to drive the combination of engines and loads to create the lowest possible fuel consumption.
