U.S. Navy ships are on track to spend more time in the South China Sea this year, U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Scott Swift said on Thursday in China, where a U.S. warship was making a port call. The visit by the USS Sterett guided-missile destroyer to Zhanjiang in Guangdong province, the first U.S. warship to visit China since President Donald Trump took office, comes amid tension in the disputed South China Sea, where Washington has criticised Beijing for building artificial islands.

Baltic Index Slips as Capesize Rates Fall
The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, slipped on Thursday as capesize rates fell for the second straight day. The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize shipping vessels, was down 10 points, or 1.16 percent, at 855 points. The capesize index lost 85 points, or 6.24 percent, at 1,277 points.
Inmarsat Enhances Installation Support Network

At approximately 8 p.m. Wednesday authorities were informed of a potential threat in a container aboard the vessel Maersk Memphis moored at Charleston's Wando terminal, forcing a temporary evacuation of the terminal while federal, state and local bomb detection units investigated the threat.

The Glen Lyon floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, BPās newest North Sea asset, was awarded full-term classification certificates for service in the Schiehallion and Loyal fields, 175 km west of Shetland. Conditions west of Shetland are among the most severe in the UK and Glen Lyon must be capable of operating in extreme weather.
