USCG Interviews Containership Crew after Warship Collision
The United States Coast Guard will on Tuesday start interviewing the crew of a Philippines-flagged container ship which collided with a U.S. warship in Japanese waters killing seven American sailors. The U.S. coast guard investigation is one several into the incident on Saturday involving the guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald and the much larger ACX Crystal. The cause of the collision at night and in clear weather is not known. "We are scheduled to interview the crew members," said U.S.

Avance Gas Expects Weak 2017, Recovery from 2018
Shipping firm Avance Gas Holding , which transports liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), expects freight rates for its vessels to remain weak in 2017 despite an improvement in the last two weeks, the Oslo-listed firm said. A sharp influx of newly built very large gas carriers (VLGCs) pushed global spot vessel rates from above $100,000 per day two years ago to around $10,000 recently, although rates have since risen to about $11,000.

Baltic Index Slips on Weak Capesize Rates
The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, fell on Tuesday for the fifth straight session, hurt by lower capesize ship rates. The overall index, which considers rates for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize shipping vessels, slipped 1 point, or 0.12 percent, to 847 points. The capesize index shed 59 points, or 5.05 percent, to end at 1,110 points, its lowest level since March 2.
