The new ferry Chimacum joined the Washington State fleet on Friday, April 7 as Washington State Ferries officially accepted the vessel from builder/contractor Vigor. The Chimacum will carry ferry riders on the Seattle/Bremerton route this summer after crews complete vessel outfitting, operational training and drills. Christened Chimacum, the new ferry’s name honors the Chemakum tribe’s gathering place, which is now the present day town of Chimacum near Port Townsend.

A newly built pilot boat Kara Yusuf, named after the owner’s grandfather, went into service on March 4, 2017 in Turkey. The boat will provide pilot transfer service in the southwest region of the Marmara Sea. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd., of Vancouver Canada, the boat was built by ICDAS Shipyard in Turkey for their own use as well as for marketing to the pilotage industry. Designated as the RAlly 1600 class, the 16 m boat is constructed with a steel hull and aluminum deckhouse.

At the Gastech 2017 conference in Tokyo, DNV GL presented Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) with an approval in principle (AIP) certificate for a new double side-hull LPG carrier design – LPG SAFE (Structural Advances for the Environment). The result of a development project conducted by HMD working closely together with DNV GL, the AIP certificate confirms that the design complies with the new DNV GL rules for the classification of ships.

Horizon Delivers Second NYC Ferry Newbuild
Alabama shipbuilder Horizon Shipbuilding, Inc. said it has delivered the second of 13 NYC Ferry vessels being built for NYC Ferry Operated by Hornblower, which will launch this summer. With sea trials and U.S. Coast Guard certification now behind her, H201 will get a final cleanup and the Hornblower crew will begin the nearly 1,900-mile journey from Horizon’s yard to New York City. The first ferry, H200, arrived in New York Harbor on Sunday morning, April 2 after a 13-day journey.
Wärtsilä to Power Norwegian Trawler Newbuild
Wärtsilä has been awarded a contract to provide the propulsion machinery for a new purse seine fishing trawler ordered by Strand Senior AS, a subsidiary of Strand Havfiske AS based in Norway. The vessel will be built at the Karstensen Skibsvaerft shipyard in Denmark. The Wärtsilä order was booked in March 2017. In specifying that an innovative and highly efficient vessel was required, the owners specifically emphasized that the propulsion system should be centered on the Wärtsilä 31 engine.
