Wärtsilä, Shipyards Partner on BWMS Retrofits
The technology group Wärtsilä is in the process of signing agreements with a number of major shipyards, the latest being Keppel Shipyard Ltd (KSL) of Singapore. The agreements are intended to establish cooperation and communication between the parties in relation to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Convention for Ballast Water Management, which is due to enter into force in September of this year.
Baltic Index Gains on Firmer Panamax Rates
The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, rose marginally on Monday supported by stronger rates for panamax vessels. The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize shipping vessels, was up 8 points, or 0.65 percent, at 1,231 points. The capesize index slipped 8 points, or 0.37 percent, to 2,165 points.

Trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Magdalen was launched on March 31, 2017 at Eastern Shipbuilding Group’s (ESG) Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla. The 356’ twin screw dredger is being constructed for the U.S.’s second largest dredging contractor, Weeks Marine Inc. Having already been earmarked for a project at the end of this year, the TSHD is expected to have a significant impact when it enters the U.S. dredging market.

Rolls-Royce signed a deal with Norwegian shipbuilder Kleven to supply its automatic crossing system, for two new double-ended plug-in battery-hybrid ferries being built for Norwegian ferry company FosenNamsos Sjø. The system controls the vessel’s acceleration, deceleration, speed and track. The system will control the ferries as they cross the fjord between Flakk and Rørvik connecting the peninsula of Fosen with Trondheim.
