Shippers Urge EU to Act in Mediterranean Migrant Crisis
European and global operators of merchant ships have joined forces with seafarersā unions to urge EU Member States to take immediate collective action to address the growing humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. Since 2014, thousands of people have been attempting the dangerous sea crossing to Europe, from Africa and the Middle East, in overcrowded boats not fit for purpose, with more than 3,500 people having already lost their lives. Many are at the mercy of people smugglers.
Research Vessel Gets 20-year Life Extension
French research vessel, Marion Dufresne II arrived at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque on March 14 for a project that aims to extend her life by a further 20 years. The work will span a total of four months. On March 30, the vessel went into drydock for a six-week period, during which the yard will carry out an extensive scope of work. The multipurpose vessel is owned by Les Terres australes et antarctiques français (TAAF) and managed by CMA CGM.

Rolls-Royce Delivers Propulsion for Norwegian Ferries
Rolls-Royce has signed contracts with Bastø-Fosen and Fjord 1 in Norway for azimuth propulsion systems for five new double ended ferries. The ferries are scheduled to enter into service along the coast of Norway in the summer of 2016. The contract value to Rolls-Royce is £5.5 million in total. All five ferries are designed by Multi Maritime and will be constructed in Turkey at the yards Sefine, Cemre and ADA.
