Norwegian Epic to Sail from Port Canaveral
Port Canaveral will homeport Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL) largest ship and currently the third largest in the world—the Norwegian Epic—starting in November 2016, offering seven-day Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, as well as three- and four-day vacations to the Bahamas in 2017. “As a regular port of call for NCL ships, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to homeport the Norwegian Epic and welcome NCL guests into our community,” said Port Canaveral CEO John E. Walsh.
GE Gas Turbines to Power US Navy’s New Destroyers

Shifts in trade winds and ocean currents powered a resurgence of endangered Galapagos Penguins over the past 30 years, according to a new study led by researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). These changes enlarged a cold pool of water the penguins rely on for food and breeding—an expansion that could continue as the climate changes over the coming decades, according to the study.
First Vessel of New Rescue Class Launched
Global shipping and energy services firm, Craig Group, has launched its first F-Class vessel, the Grampian Fortress. The IMT 958 multi-role emergency response and rescue vessel (ERRV) was christened in the Balenciaga Shipyard in Northern Spain this week. She is the first of two F-class vessels in the group’s $171 million investment, which has already seen eight vessels delivered to Craig Group in the last two years.
Tanker Retrofitted with Dual Fuel Engine
Caterpillar Marine informs it has begin a dual fuel engine retrofit conversion onboard the 472-foot Fure West tanker, owned by Furetank Rederi A/B. The MaK M 43 C diesel engine onboard the tanker will be retrofitted in hull to the seven-cylinder M 46 dual fuel platform, with each cylinder offering 900 kW of rated power. Additionally, Caterpillar is also supplying the complete gas system for the tanker, including bunker stations, two LNG tanks measuring 4.15 meters by 24 meters and the vaporizer.

French research vessel Marion Dufresne II left Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque (part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion) in northern France on July 28 having recently undergone sea trials and a complete renovation. Delivered on time, the oceanographic research vessel set sail for the Port of La Réunion where she will resume her logistic and scientific journey to the French Southern and Antarctic Lands.
BG Group Starts up Sixth FPSO in the Santos Basin
BG Group announced first oil from the Cidade de Itaguaí floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, the sixth unit to start production across the group's discoveries in the Santos Basin, offshore Brazil. The FPSO will produce from the Iracema North area of the Lula field in the Petrobras-operated BM-S-11 block. Anchored 240 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, the Cidade de Itaguaí is approximately 2,220 meters above the ocean floor.
Diana Charters Containership to Maersk
Container shipping company Diana Containerships Inc. announced that, through a separate wholly-owned subsidiary, it entered into a time charter contract with Maersk Line A/S for one of its Post-Panamax container vessels, the m/v Great. The charter, expected to commence on August 15, 2015, has a gross rate of $14,750 per day, minus a 5 percent commission paid to third parties, for a period of minimum six months to maximum nine months.
