MARAD Approves Title XI Loan for Gray Offshore
A $12 million Title XI loan guarantee supporting the recent construction of three oceangoing deck barges was recently approved by the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD). The three barges, Julius, Cordie and Gwendolyn, were built by Conrad Industries for barge leasing company Gray Offshore, LLC and are currently in service in the Gulf Coast on project cargo moves in Mexico and transporting modules for U.S. refinery upgrades.

Oceangoing petroleum barge company Bouchard Transportation Co. celebrated the christening of two new vessels, M/V Kim M. Bouchard and B. No. 270, in New Orleans. The B. No. 270 was launched at VT Halter Shipyard Operations in Pascagoula, Miss., earlier this year, and the tug Kim M. Bouchard was launched at the Moss Point Marine facility in Escatawpa, Mississippi. New USCG Cutter Sets Sail
The National Security Cutter James (WMSL 754) sailed away from Huntington Ingalls Industriesâ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division on Sunday, July 12, one month after being delivered to the U.S. Coast Guard, HII announced. The newbuild vessel James was commissioned on August 8 in Boston before heading to Charleston, S.C., where it will be stationed alongside Ingallsâ fourth NSC, Hamilton (WMSL 753). The shipbuilder has delivered five NSCs so far, with two more under construction.

The Lowdown on Ocean Acidification
Scientists say that the worldâs oceans are acidifying. This term is correct, but somewhat misleading. Until recently, the oceans have had (so far as can be determined) a pH level of about 8.4 for millennia. A pH of 7.0 is neutral. Thus, the oceans are alkaline, not acidific. But, since the beginning of the industrial age when emissions of carbon dioxide started to rise, the oceansâ pH level has dropped to 8.3 and the waters have become less alkaline.

Search Suspended for Overboard Freighter Crewman
The search for a man who reportedly jumped overboard from a freighter near Big Sable Point in Lake Michigan early Sunday morning has been suspended, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.
