LA Container Volumes Down in July
July 2015 containerized cargo volumes at the Port of Los Angeles decreased 2.5 percent compared to the same period last year. The port handled a total of 699,127 TEUs in July 2015. Imports decreased 3.5 percent, from 363,393 TEUs in July 2014 to 350,627 TEUs in July 2015. Exports declined 16.4 percent, from 163,294 TEUs in July 2014 to 136,402 TEUs in July 2015. Combined, total loaded imports and exports decreased 7.5 percent, from 526,688 TEUs in July 2014 to 487,029 TEUs in July 2015.
Port of Vitória Orders Hi-res Radars
Navigation and security surveillance systems company Kelvin Hughes announced it has been contracted to supply two of its SBS-900-2 SharpEye radar systems for the Porto de Vitória in Brazil. The equipment will be provided through Spainās Indra. The SBS-900-2 is from the āadvancedā radar family of the Kelvin Hughes Shore Based Sensor radar range. The radar system consists of a single X-Band SharpEye radar transceiver mounted in an environmentally sealed enclosure on a mast close to the antenna.
Further Turmoil for Dry Bulk Shipping
Chinaās demand for coal continues to diminish, so much so that India is expected to surpass China as the worldās largest coal importer later this year. According to international shipping association BIMCO, Chinaās consumption of coal accounts for just over 50 percent of global consumption, however only around 5 percent of it stems from imports, making the bulk shipping market very vulnerable to changes in demand.

Nearly $140m Proposed for GoM Restoration Work
U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell Thursday commended the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council for issuing its initial list of proposed projects for natural resource restoration for Gulf Coast communities in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The RESTORE Council proposed using approximately $139.6 million from the recent settlement with Transocean Deepwater, Inc. to support restoration projects in key regional watersheds.
