Rickmers FY 2013 Loss Impacted by Impairment Charge

Container ship owners and operators, Rickmers Trust Management, report a net loss of US$8.0 million in 4Q2013 and a lower net profit of US$23.5 million in FY2013, compared to net profits of US$2.2 million and US$27.6 million in 4Q2012 and FY2012 respectively due to a a US$2.4 million provision for vessel impairment was made for 'Kaethe C. Rickmers'. A goodwill impairment of US$18.4 million was also recognised in 4Q2013, up from US$2.1 million a year ago.

Designers, Robert Allan, inform that Leevac Shipyards has completed the construction of the second of their Z-Tech designed 2400 tugs. The latest, 'Zeus', has been delivered to its owners Suderman & Young Towing Company of Houston, Texas following the earlier delivery of her sister 'Chloe K' to her owners: Bay-Houston Towing Co. of Houston, Texas. Both tugs are operated by G&H Towing of Galveston, Texas on behalf of their owners. The Z-Tech Class tugs from Robert Allan Ltd.

Although some 80% of the world’s gross tonnage of shipping has been signed up to the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC), there are still many owners and managers unsure as to the extent and applicability of some of the provisions.

It is time for the Coast Guard to defend the authority granted to it by Congress, the Executive Branch and the courts. On December 27, 2013, the U.S. Coast Guard issued a notice stating that it intended to promulgate a rule containing its assessment framework for, and restating its position regarding, the federalism implications of regulations issued under the authority of various statutes within Titles 33 and 46 of the United States Code.

Carnival Vista Construction Begins

Carnival Cruise Lines said that construction is officially underway on the 135,000-ton Carnival Vista, which is slated to enter service in spring 2016. Following the initial construction start-up, workers will begin building out the 4,000-passenger ship which will feature a variety of dining, bar and entertainment options that are part of the line’s Fun Ship 2.0 product enhancement initiative as well as several innovations unique to this vessel.
