Christine Cabau Woehrel has taken up her new role as CEO of the Marseilles Fos port authority after two years heading the Port of Dunkirk. She succeeds Jean-Claude Terrier following a French transport ministry nomination that was backed by the port’s supervisory board in February and has now been confirmed by government decree. Her move marks a return to the headquarters city of CMA GGM, France’s biggest and the world’s third largest container carrier, where she worked from 1987-2011.

The dangers of shipping and fishing should not be underestimated, said seafarers’ charity Apostleship of the Sea, following the collision of a car carrier and a fishing boat in Spanish waters. Media have reported that three crew are confirmed dead after the Baltic Breeze, a Singapore-flagged car carrier, collided with a fishing boat near the Spanish port of Vigo in the early morning of Tuesday, April 1.

The Hempel Group announced it delivered a record net profit in 2013, placing it in a strong position to achieve its targets through a combination of organic and external growth. Tsunami Warning Forces Several Port Closures

Inchcape Shipping Services, (ISS), is advising that several ports remain closed following the Chilean earthquake and tsunami alert. The ports of Arica, Patache, Iquique and Mejillones are closed for operations pending damage inspections from the Chilean Maritime Authority. Tocopilla port is closed due to the current swell conditions. All other Chilean ports are opened and working in normal condition.

Container Industry Stuck in a Vicious Cycle

The industry is stuck in a vicious cycle, Drewry reports – although new ships may give carriers lower slot costs, the supply/demand dynamics are out of kilter and freight rates remain very volatile. Drewry Maritime Research’s 1Q14 Container Forecaster report highlights that the industry remains in an extended down cycle. This is being accentuated and extended by the constant delivery of new ships. The global cascade is now hurting the balance of the north/south trades.

New CTruk Design Targets Work Farther Offshore

While debate continues about the most efficient way to serve offshore wind installations farther out to sea, CTruk has been quietly forging ahead with a new OWSV designed to safely deal with rougher seas, longer transits and tougher assignments without neglecting the comfort of passengers and crew, the company said. Based on a proven workboat design concept, the CTruk EVOC22 is a 22m composite twin-hull with 7.5m beam and 1.25m draft.
