NOAA announced that the wreck of the ship USCS Robert J. Walker, a steamer that served in the U.S. Coast Survey, a predecessor agency of NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Walker served as survey ship, charting the Gulf Coast ‒ including Mobile Bay and the Florida Keys ‒ in the decade before the Civil War. It also conducted early work plotting the movement of the Gulf Stream along the Atlantic Coast.

A survey of London solicitors by ITIC has highlighted the high cost of litigation for shipbrokers and others seeking judgment in the English courts. ITIC gave a panel of London solicitors – all of whom had previously been instructed on cases involving ITIC members – a hypothetical claim scenario involving a broker which had been cut out of commission. The solicitors were asked to estimate the costs that the broker would have to pay to take the matter to court.

Sunday, March 30, during the night, M/T Glenda Meryl (jointly owned by d'Amico and Glencore and managed by Ishima ship management) rescued all the American crew of the stricken sailing yacht Even Star. The crew had taken to the ship's liferaft, abandoning the yacht which was in danger of sinking after a fire on board. The Glenda Meryl was sailing towards Panama when the USCG asked the vessel's master to take part in the salvage operation.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) has announced that it is investing up to $600,000 for targeted oil spill response research in drift ice conditions. In a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) released on the federal government's business opportunities website, the bureau called for white papers on new mechanical technologies for cleaning up oil spills in drift ice conditions that could be found in an Arctic environment.

Stolt-Nielsen Limited today reported unaudited results for the first quarter ended February 28, 2014, which included lower cargo volumes and down profits in most markets. Net profit attributable to shareholders in the first quarter was $18.6 million, with revenue of $516.7 million, compared with $36.7 million, with revenue of $524.5 million, respectively, in the fourth quarter of 2013, the company said.
