Fairbanks Morse Engine, an EnPro Industries company, has named Rhett Merriman sales manager for marine power systems. Merriman, a veteran Fairbanks Morse manager, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his new role. Throughout his 36-year career he has been involved with bringing large, complex power system projects from the proposal, bidding and contract development phase through project management to successful completion.
Caterpillar Tier 4 Offering Hits the Market

Caterpillar Marine today announced the open order board of the Cat 3516C United States EPA Tier 4 propulsion, auxiliary and diesel electric propulsion (DEP) power solutions. In addition to being EPA Tier 4 certified, the 3516C solutions are IMO II certified and IMO III compliant. The Cat 3516C Tier 4 certified engine is available in a ‘B’ rating of 2,240 bKW at 1,800 rpm and a ‘C’ rating of 2350 bKW at 1,800 rpm. An auxiliary engine is available in a rating of 2,250 ekW at 1,800 rpm.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) hosted Virginia Secretary of Education Anne Holton Wednesday for a tour of The Apprentice School at the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division. Danny Hunley, Newport News' vice president of operations, and Everett Jordan, The Apprentice School's education director, led the tour of the 90,000-square-foot facility, which includes eight computer labs, two video teleconferencing classrooms, a physics lab and a 600-seat gymnasium.

Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation, and provider of operational technologies, today announced that The Port of Virginia successfully went live at Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) on June 20 with the Navis N4 terminal operating system (TOS). The implementation of N4 took place with no major disruptions to NIT’s operations. NIT is a key terminal at The Port of Virginia, a growing, deepwater container port on the U.S. East Coast that is capable of handling the largest vessels afloat.

The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Shanghai signed a formal agreement to exchange information, technical expertise and practices to expand the use of shore power at the Port of Shanghai. The signing ceremony concluded the sixth meeting of the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue. The meeting was co-directed by: U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, China’s Vice Premier Wang Yang, and State Councilor Yang Jiechi.

Maersk, MSC Enter Vessel Sharing Agreement

Maersk Line today announced a 10-year Vessel Sharing Agreement (VSA) with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) on the Asia-Europe, Transatlantic and Transpacific trades. The VSA, to be referred to as 2M, replaces all existing VSAs and slot purchase agreements that Maersk Line has in these trades. The VSA will include 185 vessels with an estimated capacity of 2.1 million TEU, deployed on 21 strings. The overall purpose of the cooperation is to share infrastructure (network).

Because of the simplicity of these machines, few people in the industry were compelled to think critically about how such a basic item might be improved. But winches and ratchets have their downsides: fouling and birdnesting can and do happen. Wire rope is heavy, and traditional rigging takes a lot of it.

New Crane Boosts Drammen's Handling Capacity

The Norwegian Port of Drammen opted for a new Liebherr mobile harbor crane, type LHM 550, which has started operation in June 2014. This investment in the future represents the second mobile harbor crane for the port, which has been operating an LHM 400 since 2008. Thanks to this new investment, Port of Drammen has doubled its container handling capacity. Additionally, the versatile LHM 550 is also capable of efficient bulk, general cargo and heavy lift operation.
