US Gives Final Approvals to Freeport for LNG Exports
The U.S. Department of Energy gave two final approvals on Friday to Freeport LNG Development LP to export liquefied natural gas, or LNG, from its project in Texas to any country. The planned project in Quintana Island, Texas, would have the capacity to export up to 1.8 billion cubic feet a day of LNG once constructed. With domestic gas production booming, U.S. companies have lined up to ship the nation's abundant shale gas to energy- hungry consumers in Europe and Asia.

US Warship Departs for Final Deployment
To begin the ship's final deployment, USS Simpson (FFG 56) departed her homeport Nov. 14, for regularly scheduled theater security missions in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations. Commanded by Cmdr. Ken Anderson, the crew concluded a highly-successful maintenance availability and intense training exercises, and was outfitted with four Fire Scout (MQ-8B) vertical takeoff and landing tactical unmanned aerial vehicles prior to departure.
JK Fabrication Wins Emergency Tow Reel Order
Olympic Tug and Barge, a Harley Marine Services Company, has selected four JK Fabrication emergency tow storage reels for new barges being built at Zidell Shipyard in Portland (the first two) and Vigor Shipyard there also (the last two units). Given earlier success at U.S. Coast Guard testing in southern California, earlier orders from Olympic, Smith Maritime, U.S. barge and HME Construction, and acclaim from ABS and marine surveyors, JK has applied for U.S. patent on the unit.
MARAD Awards Grant for Green Tug Conversion
The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has granted $450,000 to AEP River Operations of St. Louis, Missouri, to modify the Motor Vessel (M/V) Christopher Parsonage into a fuel-efficient hybrid vessel that conserves fuel and reduces emissions. The modification will provide the 180-foot tug boat, which operates along the lower Mississippi River, with a hybrid generator set attached to the main engine that will provide auxiliary power, which would normally be produced from the diesel generator.

Belgian law firm Deminor said it had been contacted by 15 to 20 investment firms considering legal action over the failure of OW Bunker, the world's largest shipping firm which filed for bankruptcy a week ago.
