TOTE Ship Receives Powerplant
When TOTE announced plans to build the world’s largest LNG powered containerships, it stood to reason that along the way many milestones would fall. The most recent came when Doosan Engine delivered the world’s first dual-fuel, low-speed ME-GI engine to NASSCO in San Diego. The engine is built to operate on LNG and/or bunker C oil and will power the first of two 3,100-teu container ships ordered by TOTE. The Korean engine maker originally won the order to build the ME-GI engines in 2013.

Mississippi Hosts Fourth Annual National SeaPerch Challenge
The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS, and the Mississippi Regional SeaPerch Committee in mid-May hosted the Fourth National SeaPerch Challenge on the campus of Southern Miss. It was here that 108 teams of 451 middle and high school students – students from 19 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and for a first time ever, and international team from New Zealand – convened at the University’s Payne Center and Johnson Natatorium for a weekend of competition and fun.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) is urging the public to prepare for the onset of heavy weather expected to impact the Hawaiian Islands Thursday. The effects of Hurricane Iselle and Tropical Storm Julio are expected to generate extreme sea conditions, storm surge and surf of 10-15 feet throughout the Main Hawaiian Islands. Mariners and beachgoers should monitor the progress and strength of the storms through newspapers, the internet and local television and radio stations.

Plans in Place for New Suez Canal
Egypt has unveiled its plan to build a new Suez Canal alongside the existing 145-year-old waterway, and digging is already underway, GAC reported in its daily Hot Port News report. The project will see the creation of a new canal parallel to the old one, with the same depth and width, creating a two-way waterway. The existing Canal is already double-sided in some parts, and the new project will extend this to allow the transit of ships in both directions.

AWO Praises Simplification of TWIC Process
Last week, the Transportation Security Administration began nationwide implementation of a program that reforms the burdensome process by which mariners and other transportation workers receive required Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC). The TWIC OneVisit program eliminates the requirement that workers make two trips to a TWIC enrollment center to pick up and then activate their TWIC.
