Water lubricated Thordon Composite cutterhead shaft bearings have performed well for nine years on one of the largest cutter suction dredgers in the worldāDredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering N.V. (DEME)ās D'Artagnan (28,200 kW total installed power). The vessel had a major dry docking at Drydocks World-Dubai in February 2014 where the shaft was removed, and bearings and shaft inspected.

Vale Plans to Double Iron Ore Exports to China
Brazilian mining company Vale SA plans to double its iron ore exports to China within five years, Jose Carlos Martins, the company's head of ferrous metals, told reporters on Thursday. Rio de Janeiro-based Vale is the largest producer and exporter of iron ore, the main ingredient needed to make steel. Martins also said the company plans to export about 400 million tonnes of iron ore a year within five years, nearly 50 percent more than the 270 million tonnes it exported in 2013.

USS Abraham Lincoln's Final Mast Section Installed
Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), marked a major milestone this week in the refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). The shipyard installed the final section of the ship's main mast: the 38-foot upper mast section. A brief mast-stepping ceremony was held Tuesday for Lincoln shipbuilders and the crew on the flight deck of the ship to commemorate the milestone.
Panama Canal Imposes Extra Personnel Requirement
Based on recent evaluations of lockage procedures, the Panama Canal Authority has determined that due to the special configuration of some vessels, and in order to avoid accidents during lockage operations, supplementary personnel will be assigned to vessels with mooring stations on different decks; vessels with mooring stations areas that, due to their configuration, present difficulties for line handling operations; or vessels with any other deficiency that may affect transit operations.
