Kongsberg Maritime will deliver the latest version of its leading Engine Room Simulator (ERS), K-Sim Engine, to a new Applied Technology Facility at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) in New Zealand. Taking place in June 2014, this will be the first Kongsberg Maritime ERS delivery to a customer in New Zealand but one of many to leading maritime training institutions in the Southern hemisphere.
Mobile Ship Channel Reopens Following Ship Grounding
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) reopened the Mobile Ship Channel to all deep-draft commercial vessel traffic at approximately 5 p.m. Monday. The USCG restricted vessel traffic at about 3 a.m. Monday, after the container vessel MSC KYOTO grounded outside the channel. MSC KYOTO's owner contracted the towing vessels Hawk and Escambia to assist in freeing the vessel. In combination with high tide, the two tugs were able to tow the vessel back into the channel after more than 12 hours aground.
Intellian FleetBroadband Terminals for 38 Containerships
Intellian has won the contract to supply Hanjin Shipping of South Korea, with FleetBroadband FB500 terminals for a fleet of 38 container ships. The installation process has already commenced and will be completed by Intellian over the coming months as the ships arrive into port. The FB500 is the largest of Intellian's FleetBroadband product range and provides the fastest and most cost-effective FleetBroadband service available.
Transas Names Pfeiffer Navigation Director
Transas Marine has announced the appointment of Jens Pfeiffer as a Business Division Director, Navigation, Transas Marine. Jens Pfeiffer first joined Transas as a Sales Manager, Navigation in the company’s German office in 2005 where he worked for two years. Afterwards, he moved to a position of a Managing Director of the German subsidiary of a stock listed Norwegian Ship Supply Company, where Jens was later on promoted to a Vice President, Northern Europe before joining Transas again.
Rolls-Royce Engines, Equipment for Bourbon
Rolls-Royce is to deliver deck machinery and engines to an arctic Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessel (AHTS) to be built by Vard for Bourbon Offshore Norway. The contract has a value in excess of £17 million for Rolls-Royce. The deck machinery delivery from Rolls-Royce will consist of anchor handling winches, secondary winches, auxiliary winches, anchor handling cranes and a wide range of safer deck operation equipment.
Staten Island Ferry Safety Statistics Released
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) sets the standards passenger vessels, such as the Staten Island Ferry, must meet and then inspects the vessels regularly to ensure that they are in compliance. For large passenger vessels, the Coast Guard conducts four safety inspections each year. These inspections, at a minimum, include examination of the vessel structure, lifesaving equipment, machinery installation, navigation equipment, personnel, and vessel security.
Golden Energy Offshore Selects Ulstein PSVs
Golden Energy Offshore has entered into a shipbuilding contract with Nantong Rainbow Offshore & Engineering Equipments Co., Ltd. (ROC) in China for the construction of two Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) of the PX121H design from Ulstein, with the option to build two more vessels of the same design. The two confirmed vessels are due for delivery from yard in Q1 and Q2 of 2016. The vessels of the PX121H design are customized with an extra deck.
US Retail Imports to Increase in April

IPS Completes Insulation and Fabrication Contracts
Birkenhead based engineering firm IPS Marine Fabrications has completed a series of contracts for three ship operators. IPS director Paul Smith said the contracts with Whitaker Tankers, and ferry operators Seatruck and Stena showcased the broad range of fabrication and insulation skills IPS can provide. “The job spec of these contracts was really varied and shows how we can save customers time and money,” he said.
