MARAD Provides $1.4 Million for Two LNG Projects
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced that it is providing a total of $1.4 million for two projects supporting the increased use of alternative fuels and technology in the maritime industry. The funds will be used to collect information on use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine propulsion and study the issues and challenges associated with shore side storage and fueling of LNG vessels.

New Zealand waterjet manufacturer HamiltonJet said four of its HT900 waterjets were selected for IncatCrowther’s latest project - a first-of-type 70m Catamaran Fast Crewboat for operations in the Caspian Sea oil industry in Azerbaijan. When completed in 12 months time, this vessel will reportedly be the world’s largest high speedcrewboat operating in the global oil industry. ABS Appoints Chief Scientist for CFD
ABS, a provider of maritime and offshore classification services, appointed Dr. Richard Korpus as Chief Scientist, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Irish Ferries Increase Dublin-Holyhead Capacity
Irish Ferries has chartered the Epsilon (built in 2011) to supplement its existing Ireland to Britain services. The ship will provide two additional departures per day in each direction which will result in an increase in the company’s schedule to a maximum of twelve sailings between Dublin and Holyhead each day. The recently built vessel will provide significant vehicle capacity along with modern facilities on board including cabins, bar/cafeteria and self-service restaurant.
Ingalls Reports Third Quarter Results
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), a company that designs, builds and maintains nuclear and non-nuclear ships for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard and provides after-market services for military ships around the globe, reported third quarter 2013 revenues of $1.64 billion, up 2.6% from the same period last year. Third quarter diluted earnings per share was $1.36, compared to $0.26 in the same period of 2012.

Transas USA announce the installation of the Vessel Traffic Management System in Bahia Blanca Port. Under this contract, Transas replaced the previous Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) system with the Transas Navi-Harbor system, which the manufacturer said is specifically designed to ensure maritime navigation safety and efficiency, while at the same time protecting the environment from the possible adverse effects of marine traffic.

McLoughlin Launches New Harbor Tug
The latest general purpose harbour tug built by Macduff Shipyards has been launched, powered by WaterMota supplied engines. Eileen McLoughlin, owned and operated by John McLoughlin and Son (Shipping) Ltd. of Larne and Belfast, is the sister ship to Sally McLoughlin which was built in 2009. Both tugs are powered by twin Doosan 4V222TIH engines, each 588KW at 1,800RPM continuous output driving twin screws - four-blade 1,850mm diameter propellers in fixed nozzles.
