Maersk-Rickmers Performs Heavy-Lifting for U.S. Navy
Maersk-Rickmers U.S. flag heavy-lift project carrier recently lifted and moved two 100+ ton range support craft for the U.S. Navy. The largest craft weighed in at 220 metric tons; both watercraft were lifted by Maersk Texas’ powerful onboard cranes (photo). The vessels were loaded on the U.S. West Coast and traveled across the Pacific to their destinations. Maersk Texas will soon transport U.S.-manufactured power plant equipment destined for Turkey. ABS, a provider of classification services to the global offshore and marine industries, has released the ABS Guide for Enhanced Fire Protection Arrangements, as guidance for improved safety on offshore vessels and installations as well as oceangoing vessels. "Protection against fires on board vessels and offshore installations is critically important," said ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki.
Hybrid Marine Drive for Anchor Handling Tug
Shipyard Vard Brevik awarded Norwegian marine drive specialist Kumera AS a contract to deliver its Norgear advanced Multi Step Hybrid Gear for a newbuild Anchor Handling Tug (AHT). The sophisticated new AHT is designed with a green focus and will harness the latest fuel saving solutions to minimize environmental impact and optimize operations. The vessel is contracted by renowned Norwegian tug boat company Buksér og Berging AS and will be delivered in Q1 2015.

A consortium comprising of Marubeni (project integrator), the University of Tokyo (technical advisor), Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan Marine United, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, Hitachi, Furukawa Electric, Shimizu and Mizuho Information & Research have been participating in an experimental offshore floating wind farm project sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry since March 2012.
MHI, NEC Collaborate for Energy Demand Forecast

(MHI) and NEC Corporation will collaborate in the development of an "Energy Demand Forecast System for Ships" applying NEC's big data analysis technologies to achieve energy savings during ship navigation. Matson Orders Engines for New Containerships
Matson Navigation Company, Inc., a U.S. carrier in the Pacific Ocean, announced an order today for two MAN B&W, 7S90ME-GI dual fuel engines with liquefied natural gas (LNG) capability to be installed aboard two new “Aloha Class” 3,600 TEU containerships ordered last week from with Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc. (APSI). The deal includes an option for three further vessels. The dual fuel engines, each developing 42,700 kW, are reportedly the largest ever ordered in terms of power output.

Dennis L. Bryant retired from the U.S. Coast Guard with the rank of Captain after 27 years active duty. His billets included serving on the icebreaker NORTHWIND for several years including in 1969 when it escorted the tanker MANHATTAN through the Northwest Passage (this was back in the old days, when there was real ice in the Arctic). He also spent various tours as a law specialist, including an assignment as the Coast Guard’s Law of the Sea officer.
Port of Kiel Gears Up Winter Preparations
Preparations are in full swing throughout the port of Kiel for the oncoming winter period as the 2,050 GT, 88m long and 13 m wide cargo ship Julieta arrived with a load of 3,200 tons of gritting salt from Morocco. The Julieta docked at Berth 9 in the Ostuferhafen and was unloaded there by the firm of Burmann. Two giant grabs were used which are capable of offloading up to 400 tons of rock salt an hour.
