Maersk Supply Ships Q3 2013 Profits Soar
Maersk Supply, a subsidiary of the A. P. Moller-Maersk group, came out of the third quarter of 2013 with a profit of US$76-million, against a profit of US$ 48-million in the same quarter in 2012. Revenue rose from US$ 226-million in the period of 2012 to US$ 240 million. The profit for the third quarter of 2013 improved compared to the same period last year primarily due to higher utilization and lower operating costs.

P&I Club Analysis Warns of False Sense of Navigational Security
The London P&I Club says that a recent analysis of collision cases has highlighted the effect complacency has on casualties. The club recently undertook a ‘root cause’ analysis of collision cases, which concluded that the majority could be categorised as human error, with complacency often a significant contributing factor. In the latest issue of its 'StopLoss Bulletin', it cites the case of a bulk carrier which was approaching the end of a Traffic Separation Scheme.

US-based manufacturer of electric motors, mechanical and electrical motion controls and power generation products, Regal Beloit, has closed on the acquisition of Cemp, s.r.l., a European manufacturer of hazardous duty motors primarily for oil and gas and marine applications. Regal inform that for 2014 and 2015, Cemp is anticipated to be accretive to earnings per share by $0.03 to $0.05 and $0.06 to $0.08, respectively.

Aker Philadelphia Lay Keel of Second SeaRiver Tankship
Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (APSI) has held a ceremonial keel laying for the second of two Aframax tankers that it is building for SeaRiver Maritime, Inc., a Exxon Mobil Corporation’s U.S. marine affiliate. When completed in 2014, the Liberty-Class vessels will be 820 feet long and be capable of carrying 115,000 tons of crude oil. The tankers are intended to be used to transport Alaskan North Slope crude oil from Prince William Sound to the U.S. West Coast.
