Austal Forges Links with Thai, Vietnam Shipyards
Austal announce new strategic partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region to enhance its support to the US Navy & others in the region. Following on from the strategic partnership with Singapore’s Sembawang Shipyard Pte Ltd announced in January 2013, Austal has now secured similar agreements with Unithai Shipyard and Engineering located within Thailand's main international deep-sea port of Laem Chabang, and with the Cam Ranh Shipyard in Vietnam.
New Hapag-Lloyd Cruise Ship Christened
'Europa 2' has been christened in the Port of Hamburg during the German port's 824th anniversary celebrations. The new cruise ship sailed to the launch site near the riverside district of Blankenese, where Godmother Dana Schweiger officially gave the new ship her name: “I christen you the Europa 2 and wish you and your crew good voyages and safe returns, and may there always be enough water beneath your keel,” she said.

Great Lakes Shipyard Contracted for USCG Cutter Repairs
Great Lakes Shipyard hauled out the United States Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay (WTGB-105) using its 770-ton capacity Travelift. The repair contract, awarded to the Shipyard in early March, includes routine drydocking and underwater hull maintenance such as inspection and testing of propulsion systems; overhaul of sea valves and shaft seal assemblies; and other various cleaning, inspections, and repairs.
MARAD Deputy Matsuda Resigns
David Matsuda, the U.S. Maritime Administrator, announced that he is stepping down. In a statement released by Marad spokesperson Kim Strong, Matsuda's career highlights and accomplishments were also listed. "Matsuda, who previously worked as the primary transportation counsel to Sen. Frank Lautenberg, was responsible for overseeing more than $1 billion in federal assistance to modernize over 100 of America's small shipyards, upgrade 25 U.S. ports, and build new vessels in the U.S.
New Online Training Course for SAM Electronics ECDIS
Safebridge, the Internet-based simulation training specialist, released its E-learning courseware for training and certification on the new ECDISPILOT Basic and Platinum models. Courseware development for Chartpilot and Multipilot models is also well advanced. “The introduction of training for a further ECDIS manufacturer means that we are now able to offer the industry an even more flexible service,” said Safebridge Managing Director Ulf Steden.

Ulstein Delivers Fourth PSV in PX121 Series
Ulstein Verft delivered Blue Thunder, the fourth of six medium-sized platform supply vessels of the PX121 design from Ulsteinto Blue Ship Invest, on Monday, May 13, 2013. Owned by Blue Ship Invest, a wholly-owned company in Ulstein Group, the platform supply vessel (PSV) is commercially and technically under the management of Atlantic Offshore. Blue Thunder will enter a four-month contract with Statoil, with four monthly options.
DNV Relaunches Standard for Offshore Service Modules
DNV has completely rewritten the standard for Offshore Service Modules certification, commonly referred to as DNV 2.7-2, which was first published in 1995. On June 11, 2013, DNV will roll this out to an industry seminar taking place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Center (AECC). This event will look at the issues surrounding the management and use of temporary equipment on offshore installations and how the new Standard for Certification may provide some clear guidance.
PC Maritime to Install ECDIS in 50-vessel China Shipping Deal
PC Maritime’s Navmaster ECDIS has been chosen by China Shipping Group to be fitted to 50 newbuild bulk carriers. This large ECDIS fleet contract was negotiated by Bogerd Martin NV’s subsidiary company, Bogerd Martin China, based in Shanghai. The vessels vary in size between 46,000 dwt and 76,000 dwt. Ten vessels already have single Navmaster ECDIS installed and the remaining 40 bulk carriers are to be equipped during the next 12 months.
